Prometheus Trailer Arrives Online
Nothing to do with Alien, eh?

23 December 2011  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: Apple

submit to reddit

Trailer week 2011, you've been good to us. The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit, and now this, the very teasery trailer for Ridley Scott's Prometheus.

Clearly hugely inspired by the original trailer for Sir Ridley's original Alien (love the title slowly appearing on screen and the eerie shrieks on the soundtrack), it contains our first (moving) glimpses of Scott's summer blockbuster, which seems to be on an entirely different scale to Alien, while providing some refreshingly familiar imagery.

Meanwhile, it poses more questions than it answers - just right for a teaser, eh? Who is that unfortunate Prometheus crew-member whose space helmet appears to be soaked in acid? Why is Charlize Theron running down corridors on the Prometheus itself? Is that Noomi Rapace, as lead scientist Elizabeth Shaw, screaming in agony at the end? If so, why so? Just what is Idris Elba looking at, and why does he seem miffed about it? And why does that spaceship, the one that appears to be crashing at the end, ring a few bells?

Overall, in a week where we've been spoiled with some fantastic trailers for next year's movies, this one may just be the best of the bunch. Wow. Just wow.

Prometheus is out in the UK on June 1.

RE: Can't wait!
Damn! That trailer looks fucking AWEEEEESOOME!!!! I went apeshit watching the stunning trailer, and the soundtrack was amazing! I cannot wait! Seriously, i'm giddy with excitement! Ridley Scott back directing a sci fi film..at last!! Forget about the Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit; this film here is what its all about!! We've been waiting over two years for the new Bat flick, and a couple more for our return to Middle Earth, but we've had to wait over a quarter of a century to watch a R More

I cant believe some of the negativity sometimes expressed on the net for this.. its as though some people feel they have the story, the plot, and everything in between figured out by looking at the trailer that's just over 1 min long. Most of the trailer is more than likely shot out of sequence and the film is reported to be at least two and a half hours long. More

RE: be warned!
Are you seriously saying that Black hawk down wasn't as good as alien? or gladiator? or American gangster or blade runner? Thelma and Louise Kingdom of heaven directors cut Matchstick men The Duellists Alien is a great great film but so is its director. There's not a director alive or dead that has made every film he/she has made into a classic and i dont think any Ridley film is truly awful. RE: how come...
The reason the suits were more weathered and old and shabby in the original film was because they were on a mining tug in space, a mineral collecting tug. Here in this the same universe you have a bunch of scientists/ analysts on an exploration mission, Is today's technology any different if you sent a science team aboard a ocean exploration vessel in comparison to say a fishing linear and their appropriate crews?. It's the Land Before Aliens (ish)
Big hint in the end titles, chap called Giger gets a credit. Also, at 0.45mins, that looks very like the space jockey chaps seat. Factor in the original alien ship, some nice green acid, and I think we've got the prequel here, and it looks good to me. But... the big thing about the original Alien was suspense and characters. Only problem, as fergww has said, is that it looks too advanced to be the precursor to the original. More

not impressed
I guess I'm the only one who thinks this looks quite dull. People running down corridors; spaceships; otherworldy sculptures. We've been here before a million times. If it wasn't Ridley Scott and a supposed prequel to Alien we'd be ignoring it. And I speak as a Ridley Scott fan........... hope the film is as good as it could be but haven't been convinced by anything so far.......... he hasn't made a good film for so long. Just waiting for Russell Crowe to burst out of someone's chest wearing t More

lots of people are talking about the fact there are no aliens in this like its a good thing?!? are they in it or not.? and if not why would anyone leave out the single scariest alien ever in film? especially when its a prequel to a film called 'alien'!! and whats with the anal probe sounding name? whats wrong with 'Alien begins' ha ha- jurys out for me, all looks a bit high sci fi and low on horror. Prometheus Trailer Breakdown
Like everyone else, the trailer is superb...so was your (Empire's) breakdown of it...It all adds up to the following: a) The eggs that Kane found in Alien were not laid by a queen. They could be what remains of the crew of the Prometheus and the 'engineers'. b) That guy in the wheel chair...could well be an aged Weyland-Bishop who's been kept in stasis for YEARS and is woken up to go on the voyage - Lance Henrickson in heavy make up! could be.....c) The engineers are 6 foot plus pale blue skinne More

Watching this...
...helped me understand why I love movie trailers so much. This and The Dark Knight Rises trailer are masterclasses in giving you just enough to make you want to invent a time machine so you can skip six months and watch the films, but also because they basically don't show you anything about the film's plot and leave you guessing, then contradicting yourself, then doubting yourself before you do some more guessing before you have to take a deep breath, calm yourself down and have a wry chuckle More

I always suspected it would be but this is DEFFO now my most hotly anticipated movie of 2012. I think those Urns become alien eggs! Also, somebody mentioned earlier in this thread that they were dissapointed that the tech in the movie isnt in keeping with the tech in the original ALIEN and looks more advanced. I think i can answer that...... The Prometheus is an exploratory research vessel whilst the Nostromo is a commercial mining ship. It makes sense that one will be higher tech than the other More

if this is set before Alien, their technology looks so vastly superior to that shown in the original. Am i the only one who thinks this is a bad idea?
Well, after watching this trailer, it's clear that despite the fact that we won't be seeing the aliens we know of, it's going to explain everything - the origins of the xenomorphs, face huggers and space jockeys - and i don't want the Alien saga to be ruined by being demystified like that. Therefore, i'm giving this a miss. Why oh why do filmmakers always feel the need to spell everything out when it's so much better to keep certain things a mystery? More

HOLY WEYLAND-YUTANI CORP.!
This is how you make a trailer. A few scraps of dialogue, lots of intriguing images, but not presented in a seizure-inducing manner and an eery score to accompany it. My expectations just went from reserved to extremely high. The trailer breakdown can't arrive soon enough! So, I guess the so called 'Space Jockeys' are experimenting on some kind of biological weapon, or weapons. The Weyland Corp.
