Daniel Craig Talks Bond
Promises Skyfall better than Quantum

12 December 2011  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Time Out (via Collider)

Daniel Craig Talks Bond

Some of us really like Quantum Of Solace, but the consensus is admittedly against us. Maybe the objective point-of-view is that it's a better action movie than it is a Bond film, and on that score, it sounds like Daniel Craig is in agreement, having just admitted to Time Out that Quantum was fatally compromised by the 2008 writers' strike. Skyfall, he promises, will be better.

"On Quantum, we were fucked," says Craig, succinctly. "We had the bare bones of a script and then there was the strike and there was nothing we could do. We couldn't employ a writer to finish it. You swear you'll never get involved with shit like that, and then it happens!" Craig even reveals that he ended up writing some of the scenes himself, in collaboration with director Marc Forster. "And a writer I am not..."

Skyfall's apparent decision to put aside the Quantum plot thread running through that film and its predecessor Casino Royale, now makes more sense in the light of Craig's admitting "[Quantum] was never meant to be as much of a sequel as it was; it just ended up being one, starting where the last one finished. For me personally, on a level of feeling satisfied, I would want to do better next time. That’s really important to me."

But if he was disappointed in his second Bond outing, he seems excited about his third. " I really think this one is better even than Casino Royale", Craig enthuses. "[Director] Sam Mendes has lived with Bond all his life, and he grew up with Bond in the same way I did. We have exactly the same reference points, we both like the same Bond movies, and we both like the same bits in the same Bond movies we like. We sat down and we just rabbited for hours about Live And Let Die or From Russia With Love, and talked about little scenes that we knew from them. That’s how we started talking about it. That’s what we tried to instill in the script. He’s been working his arse off to tie all these things together so they make sense... in a Bond way!"

Skyfall is currently shooting, as proven by regular photographs of clapperboards on the official Facepage. We'll next see Craig on-screen in David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which is out in the UK on December 26.

Well...
This very site/mag gave Quantum 4 stars. "Disappointment" for the last one is designed to build hype for the next "better than Casino Royale" one. Remember Bruce Willis saying he liked Die Hard 4 more than 2 and 3? Quantum of Solace wasn't the best ever but it ties up some loose ends of Casino Royale and established the Quantum organisation, etc. It's the only Bond film to be a proper 100% sequel and many critics enjoyed that fact. Now, #3 has free reign to do what More

QOS proof
I think the recent revelation that QOS was filmed with a half-arsed script proves that anyone who liked it should give up talking about films (let alone writing for a movie magazine). It felt like a nonsensical string of action sequences clumsily tacked together. The Greengrassesque unsteady cam filming was shit. It had the worse theme song, title sequence and cinematography. The best thing thing about it was its trailer which made the movie all the more disappointing. Two names fill me with con More

Better than QoS? That won't be too hard. Bond sitting in a chair for 2hrs doing a crossword would be better than QoS. More

RE: Strike-breaking?
I don't quite understand this bit in the article by Owen Williams: Skyfallrent decision to put aside the Quantum plot thread running through that film and its predecessor Royaleakes more sense in the light of Craig's admitting "Solacenever meant to be as much of a sequel as it was; it just ended up being one, starting where the last one finished. RE: Strike-breaking?
L: davidjthomson Is Mr Craig admitting to breaking the writers strike? Whilst he may have had the best of intentions, the writers were striking for what they felt was a valid reason, and by doing some of the writing himself, he weakened their protest. However, Quantum was a less satisfying film the Royale. t my reservations about Medes' qualifications for directing action flicksond IS an action flick) but I'll try to keep an open mind. sp; wer..... 2nd Unit Director More

RE: Quantums Car Chase sucked...
Im definatly in the pro 'QOS' camp, seen it twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times The opera scene in particular is such a quintessential Bond scene, played to perfection by Daniel Craig. If it was Jason Bourne, he would have snuck in, tapped into some conversations, then ghosted out again with no one the wiser. Bond however wants them to know that he's there, listening in. More

RE: Quantums Car Chase sucked...
oS, don't understand how many cannot 'get' this film. It's structure is a 'slow build', even more so given DC's comments. There are 'key moments' which hold up to be heading in a direction to take us into the next stage. Personally I think's it all 'smokescreen' that Quantum are not involved in Skyfall, my feeling is 'at some level' they will be, whether it be a insider in MI6 (Fiennes) or Finney's character turning M against Bond. t="trebuchet ms"] uld be mad not to have a Quantum reference o More
