Ben Whishaw Confirmed As Bond's Q
He'll be teching it up in Skyfall

Ben Whishaw Confirmed As Bond's Q

There have been rumours floating about to this effect for a day or so now, but it appears that Ben Whishaw has been confirmed as the new Q in Skyfall, after the BBC called his agent to check. That means the star of Perfume will be kitting Bond out with the usual dart-pens, rappelling-watches and death-cars you'd expect, and probably a few new gimmicks you don't.

Whishaw steps into a role formerly occupied by the late, great Desmond Llewelyn and briefly by John Cleese. Given that the actor (one of the great stage Hamlets of the past couple of decades) is best known for playing nervy, cerebral young characters (Sebastian in Brideshead Revisited; John Keats in Bright Star), we're guessing that this Q will make a virtue of his relative youth, revelling in the fact that he's more hip to the tech than the spy he's equipping. After all, young people nowadays all seem like Q, eh, with their iThingies and Wiiyamacallits.

What do you think about Ben Whishaw playing Q?
Interesting choice; he looks like a good contrast to Craig
What? Him from Nathan Barley? This will end in disaster!
There is only one Q, and his name is LLewelyn
As long as he spouts less poetry than he did in Bright Star, I'm onboard.
No! More poetry, damnit!

Skyfall has just started shooting at Bond's traditional home in Pinewood, and will be back in cinemas on October 26, 2012. Sam Mendes is of course directing, with Daniel Craig and Judi Dench returning and the likes of Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe and Javier Bardem joining them.

RE: good, bad or just ugly
that's my only problem that they've cast someone younger. i'm sure they'll go more realistic with the gadgets. More

good, bad or just ugly
Oh good gofd no! Casting way too young - and 10 bucks she's he uses a posh accent. I suspect they are doing this to get in with younger audiences (have they Lucas'd the franchise!) I saw this guy playing Hamlet on stage as a whiney/crybaby (IE- not a very good version at all). But maybe someone in the writing department has an ace up their sleeve and this is planned, and not inserted via the producers. Time will tell! More

thank god they ditched Cleese
utterly awful git that he was. the Bond films hit bottom again when they had bmws and basil fawlty being 'hilarious'. even when they got an aston clesse was still there being a twat! i agree with many here, let's keep bond the hard bastard that Craig has done so well to reintroduce so let's do the weapon thing, not pair of sunglasses that let him see through girl's skirts. basically Mr Mendes, make this better than CR (which was a 10/10 movie) and make it better than QoS (about a 7) and most More

Q should now be about weapons not gadgets...
Fine actor but if they insist on bringing Q back I think it should be a hard b**tard actor that can convince as an SAS equivalent, who brings Bond up to speed on weapons, not a tech nerd showing him the latest iPhone app. That would fit better with the excellent gritty feel that the franchise has found. and i dont mind Q being a young guy. In the modern world wouldnt the techie guy be some young computer genius? Im sure most of MI6 are straight out of university . L: dougwatsonuk If you have missed Moneypenny and Q that means you are also an old school bond fan.....I think the new ones are good because they are going in a new direction. The whole point of starting it all again is because they wanted a new audience, and that is what they are getting. Keep Mopneypenny and Q in the past where they were legendary. f course i love the old films but the new ones are a refreshing change.  Lets wait and see what they do with Q and Moneypenny. I More

They didn't need to ask him, that's why.
I think some of the doubters here have misunderstood the point of the Daniel Craig films. Which was to strip the character bare from all that baggage and start again. Build him back up without all the silly camp things and buffoonery that you had at the height of Moore's tenure (even with Brosnan too). Characters like Q (Quartermaster) and even Moneypenny do make sense. Bond's prestige is bound to have increased due to his actions and therefore as he becomes a more valuable and trusted intellig More

Why Didn't They Ask Cleese?

He'll be good, because he's a good actor anyway but Q is meant to be just a short step down from M authority-wise. He's meant to be an old bloke fussing around his workshop with a lot of young, white-coated prodigies. He's meant to be very disapproving of Bond's young, gung-ho antics and disregard for equipment. Ben Whishaw is a good young man in an old man's role. More

L: edjones95 As much as I loved the silly gadgets that Bond used to have I wasn't that bothered when they were removed and now (After two films) I can't really see how they'll fit into this new Bond style ho says they're going to be silly gadgets? I doubt very much that it's going to be scenes reminiscent of the Moore days, with daft comic slapstick moments and Bond making crap double-entendres while Q looks on in exasperation. Why do you assume that'll be it? It'll be modernised. With More

So now we know who Ben Wishaw is playing. They didnt announce it at the press conference because it would give it away. But they didnt announce who Ralph Fiennes was playing either. Could It be for the same reason? Could he be playing a well known character from the series. We know he could be a villain. If Ben Is Q could Ralph be a long running baddie? Could Fiennes actually be Blofeld? And thats why they did nt announce it.Just throwing it out there. More

Don't touch that! That's my lunch.
Great casting, great new direction, great actor. He will be Q in name only, he'll be a tech-savvy geek with no relation to Boothroyd, in order to fit in with Craig's style of films. Can't wait for Skyfall. More

Major error in my view bringing Q and Moneypenny into it. This new era was all about moving away from that framework. Reverse gear in my view, as is NOT having Quantum conclusion to make a trilogy. More

Say No To Shoehorning
With the complicated relationship that developed between M and Bond in Craig's last two movies, I think the same could be done between Bond and his new compadres. If they go the other way, however, and shoehorn Q and Moneypenny in as mere gimmickry then for me they'll inevitably detract from the overall experience of the film. Saying that, the more you go about box ticking and trying to appease everybody's expectations of what a Bond film should be, the more you're constrained in your creativity More

Lest we forget
I'm dubious but then take a moment to think back to Casino Royale and the bold and refreshing interpretation of Bond by Daniel Craig. No one saw that coming and many were doubtful simply because he was blonde. I think the same could happen here with Q and with Moneypenny too. I'd like to see Bond and Moneypenny get it on. More

Great bit of casting, but ...
... do we still need Q? Ben Whishaw is superb, don't get me wrong, but I thought the new style Bond was more no-nonsense than that. What does Bond need other than a hard c*ck, a loaded gun and an insane ability to both take and deliver a rich beating? Hmm, mumble grumble ... there better not be any f*ckin' jetpacks ... etc. etc. mumble moan. More

oh dear Bond is going down the silly route again. We don't need Q or Moneypenny. They should develop his friendship with Leiter, show his life in London, his flat etc i.e. aspects of the novels never really seen in the films before. More
