Lee Child Explains Tom Cruise's Casting
Exclusive: The Jack Reacher author talks

Lee Child Explains Tom Cruise's Casting

There's a new Empire out today, with Rooney Mara (as Lisbeth Salander) and Daniel Craig (as Mikael Blomkvist) on the front for David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo but inside, there's also a great interview with the man behind Jack Reacher, Lee Child, whose novel, One Shot, is set to hit the big screen in 2013, starring Tom Cruise.

We don't want to spoil the whole thing for you, but here are couple of snippets from our tête-à-tête with the best-selling author, concentrating on his opinion of Tom Cruise's casting as the unstoppable man mountain that is Jack Reacher.

"I wasn't surprised [by Cruise's casting] because this was on the cards for a very long time... we've been dealing with his people for six years."

"Obviously, Tom Cruise doesn't match the physical description of Reacher in the books... but the movie is not going to match the book anyway. More than that though, which actor does match Reacher physically? What people forget is that Tom Cruise is quite possibly the best actor of his generation."

But how will Child's Reacher compare to the screen version? Does he expect vast differences – outside of Tom Cruise playing someone who's 6ft 5in?

"If you look at what McQuarrie [One Shot's screenwriter, whose previous work includes The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie] and Cruise have done before, I think this Reacher will be more clinical the scapel rather than the sledgehammer."

"I think fans of the books will go to the movie and be a little weirded out for the first five minutes, but then the question is, what will happen after the first five minutes? If it's as done as well as I hope it will be, I don't think it will be a problem."

There's plenty more in the mag, which, as we say, is out today!

One Shot will be in cinemas sometime 2013, whereas Jack Reacher's latest adventure, The Affair, is on shelves today.

Cruise at 250 lbs?
Love the Reacher novels; won't see any of the movies. Hard to look at someone that is 5'-7" 147 lbs and imagine Reacher at 6'-5" ,250 lbs. what a waste. Hope all the movies tank More

What a load of bollocks
haven't seen the movie but do read a lot of jack reacher books, just got a new one shot and its the fist one that does not have jacks sats in the front. Also how Can a five foot something play 6 foot 5, I do like tom cruise but please even he is not that good an actor to play someone who is over a foot taller More

Great effort
Having now seen the movie I would like to offer congratulations to all involved. What a superb flick. Beautifully acted, produced and delivered. The plot was faithful to the book, script was intelligent and supported a completely coherent plot (something of a novelty these days). I note Cruise produced the movie so hopefully he has the rights to all the books. Well if their not taking Cruises lack of size & build into consideration then surely The Rock would've been a great choice as he ticks most of the boxes unless that is they have anything against the colour of his skin? More

I'm saddened
Lee doesn't need the money. He created a great folk hero, and turned him into an unbelievable midget. I feel fortunate in one sense that Cruise is so physically different than Reacher that I can still read the novels. Lee sold out. I will NOT see the movie. THE END. More

Does he jump up and down on couches? Is he a religious fanatic?? Will he be 5'6" in his next book? (Like to know how) You sold out, Lee!!!!!!! SELLOUT!!! Tom Cruise? Greatest actor of our time? Simply aghast at the thought of Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher. What if he 5'7" wearing heels? Just watched the trailer in which he takes on someone a head taller than himself...looks ridiculous. Readers fell in love with the character Jack Reacher who is a tall, rugged, unassuming man traveling through life on a code of honesty and justice. A man who matches his physical description and abilities cannot be played by someone who is of such a s More

Tom Cruise a great actor? When di that happen? How can a midget play the part of a 6' 5" man? Thios is another case of an author selling out to the movie industry. The only reason for castingCruise is because he is popular with women. This is one Jack Reacher reader who will not be a Jack Reacher viewer. I hope it is the biggest cinema flop in history. More

When I heard Tom Cruise had been cast I decided there an then never to watch the movie. I'm sorry but Jack Reacher is all about his physical size. Its what makes him so confident in a fight, I hate hate hate the fact that Tom Cruise has been cast. It makes me cross. As I'm reading one of the Jack Reacher novels at the mo I'm just like hell no Tom Cruise is a crap choice. errrrgggghhh makes me mad just thinking about it. What's the big deal?
Who cares about what height Tom Cruise is? He is a great actor and will bring depth to the character which is better than having a lump of wood playing him!! Not all characters from books work as well on the screen so his height don't mean shiz!! Look at the quality films that Tom has given us - very rarely does he disappoint but the haters can keep moaning! More

Wake up Lee!
I love your books Lee, but you obviously don't understand what your fans love most about Jack. A scalpel just doesn't cut it (no pun intended). A big part of what makes Reacher such a loved character IS that he can walk into a bar full of bad guys and decimate them. His imposing presence is what we want to see. And there are actors out there who could be that. Imagine if Michael Shannon bulked up. Think about it! More

Money talks
Never read any "Reacher" novels, but on reading the description of him, Tom Cruise did not spring to mind. I understand he's box office draw and where he goes the money will follow. It says that Jack Reacher doesnt say much. And I get the impression he stay quite ashen faced. RE: "REACHING"
Name one actor with the physical stature to faithfully represent the character. Blokes of that size tend not to be leading men capable of carrying a film, no matter how strong they are, and more crucially, real blokes of that size CANNOT MOVE AROUND IN REALITY LIKE THE STORY WOULD DEMAND OF THEM. They are lumbering hulks and in reality would last minutes against things that take away every advantage of their size (ie guns), so it is inevitable that compromises in the translation to screen would More

"REACHING"
This is my fourth posting on this issue, had some time so thought id do a fifth. Lee Child needs to remember that for better or worse there a legions of his fans out there that for one reason or another do care about his work and whatever else derives from them. I find it rather interesting that as an author who depends on book sales for a living he has, thus far, chosen not to hear what his fans say about the proposed movie - it goes afainst every marketig principle im aware of - going agains More

hmmm
It was the first feature I read in the new issue. Child makes fair comments on Cruise being the actor of his generation. When he's "acting", he's great. But the rest of the article reeked of him protecting his nest egg. Connery had to win Fleming over, we know; but TC seems to be light years away from Reacher. I haven't even read the books and I'm suspicious. God knows how the fanatics will be. More

"I think this Reacher will be more clinical – the scapel rather than the sledgehammer" So it's going to be Mission Impossible 5 then? I've not read the books so can't comment to much on the character but from what I know there are plenty of better options. Cruise is a good action actor but this just seems wrong More

Well if that is his opinion, then my estimation of him as a writer and creator of a brilliant character has gone down significantly...
