Avatar Will Invade Disney Theme Parks
James Cameron's on board

20 September 2011  |  Written by James White  |  Source: The Wrap

Avatar Will Invade Disney Theme Parks

Given how much money it made and how popular it has become, we’re frankly a little astonished that it took this long for someone to pitch James Cameron on the idea of creating an Avatar-based theme park attraction. But now the Walt Disney Company has secured a deal to open an Avatar Land at the Animal Kingdom park it runs as part of the Disney World Resort in Florida.

Disney boss Bob Iger made the announcement at a press conference with Cameron and Fox chiefs Jim Gianopulos and Thomas Rothman in attendance. The idea is to create fully realised themed sections based around Pandora as seen in the film. And with construction set to start in 2013, the finished product will draw not only from the original, but also from Cameron’s planned sequels, including what he refers to as “biomes”, or the various parts of the planet.

"Avatar was meant to celebrate our interaction with nature and nature's wonder and diversity," Cameron said at the conference. "Putting our Avatar themed land into Animal Kingdom is extremely exciting.”

While Cameron will naturally have plenty of input into the design and working practices of the parks, he’s obviously going to be a bit busy getting the next two films made. But it appears he has full confidence in the Disney team. “I quickly realized that their vision for this thing was far beyond what I'd imagined – and I've got a pretty good imagination."

We’re just hoping he stops short of endorsing the Titanic line of cruise ships. Because that really can’t end well for anyone.

I wish Cameron would focus on something completely new - a film that is - and just forget about Avatar, theme parks and converting his old movies into 3D. Don't get me wrong, I do like Avatar, but I'm getting bored of it because he's so obsessed with it. I want to see him do an original film again, or even direct the next Terminator (he would be a better choice than Justin Lin). I can't say whether Cameron genuinely has good ideas for Avatar 2 & 3, or he's simply doing it because of how m More

Succesful? Yes. Popular? Not so sure.
Although it made a ridiculous amount of money, I'm not convinced that Avatar holds a warm and fuzzy place in people's hearts in the way, say, Harry Potter does. The Avatar toy line didn't sell particularly well so you have to wonder how many kids will be dragging their parents along to the theme park. While I have no doubt the Disney imagineers will do a fantastic job, I question its long term interest. More

When will it end......aaarghhh
The guy really needs to stop endorsing Avatar as some kind of money making gimmick and start making movies. It seems to since Titanic all he seems to be doing is revolving around Titanic and Avatar More
