Empire's Judge Dredd Cover Unveiled
Plus Spidey and The Dark Knight Rises

25 July 2011  |  Written by Ali Plumb

submit to reddit

That's right, it's time to release the brand new Empire cover (out this Thursday, July 28), and needless to say, this month's issue is an absolute cracker. For starters there's Karl Urban as Judge Dredd glowering menacingly into your magazine-buying eyes, flanked on either side by Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man and Christian Bale's Batman for The Dark Knight Rises.

Not a bad little team, we think you'll agree... Inside the actual issue itself you'll be happy to discover 12 ever-so-very exclusive exclusives, including John Carter, Man Of Steel, The Avengers and Men In Black 3. Yep, we've really got the lot this time after all, this is the Heroes Of 2012 issue we're talking about.

Then there's an amazing collection of unseen Jaws photography for you Spielberg afficionados to feast your eyes on, as well as everything you need to know about Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Not forgetting Olly Moss' Ollywood and all the other brilliant regulars you (hopefully) know and (ideally) love.

Trust us, it'll make that train journey / uber-long bath / bus trip to Bangor / space shuttle expidition just fly by in a flurry of high quality journalism and pictures of Karl Urban kicking doors in. You know, just the way you like it.

This month's Empire is on newsstands Thursday, July 28, but if you've already subscribed you should have your copies now, or within the next couple of days or so. Lovely.

In terms of the shoulder pads it looks like they're going for the look of the early comics. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ruf9JBv9V4U/SsDrv5_n6nI/AAAAA AAACxA/H7SrMynpEho/s400/dreddishere.jpg More

L: dreddhead123 What is wrong with that? You're are the one that is wrong. It will work. It's pig ignorance to dismiss that look and say it's silly. Shot well and it will look good. I can't believe fans of Dredd are so dismissive of that look. f I can fan the flames a bit, I think a fairly direct translation of the uniform could be done and I personally would have preferred it. As it is, its just okay. Also agree about the chin. Needs a bit of prosthesis to beef it up.S More

Glad I'm a subscriber. This is the first cover of Empire I'd actually be embarrassed to buy. I'd have to cover it up with copy of Razzle or something when I went to the till. Seriously, was it take your kid to work day in the graphics department? More

RE: Great Cover!
These cover shots never look particularly good though. Too much lighting and too staged, and whats going on with his face? I think this will look on film though, very much a throwback to the original artwork as has been noted. Actually my only real problem is the gun, which looks a bit cheap and plastic like More

RE: Great Cover!
The images inside are quality. Slightly off topic but I've got to say, I'm not convinced about the bike design I've seen, the handle bars seem too low and close to the riders body making him sit too upright, I think they should move them up so the rider is leaning forward more over where the gas tank usually is. Any thoughts ? More

@oli_huts: Original costumes only work for some comic book movies. Ala Spiderman, Fantastic Four, if they're not too over the top. How exactly would a grey and black, lycra-clad batman fit into Nolan's gritty real-world batman? Or a yellow and black striped Wolverine, with ear wings, look in X-Men? Or the original Optimus Prime!? More

RE: Empire's Judge Dredd Cover Unveiled
I got the subscribers issue today (the cover is freakin epic FYI, much better than this cover that looks like something a GCSE media studies student might make) and if you actually look inside it, there are some pics of Judge Dredd and he looks BADASS. Ok, so I've never read any of the comics or whatever, but just don't mock it at the first hurdle. I mean, you look at the Batman Begins batsuit. It looks NOTHING like the original costume, but that film still made like, a gazillion bucks and is r More

L: Rgirvan44 A direct translation of that uniform would look stupid in a film. It would get laughed off the screens.  lso the 1995 Dredd film stayed faithful to that look and what happened ?, why would the film makers want to replicate something that was a complete failure, on nearly every level, then to be certainly accused of being unoriginal. The iconic imagery of the look of the character has been kept with the helmet and In the context of the direction they are taking with th More

I think Dredd looks decent however Bats and Spidey are badly photoshopped in, looks like a last minute rush job. My bet is they planned a purely Dredd based cover, then the accountants came on board at the last minute and said "this won't sell without Batman" or something to that effect. Hence the recycled image from TDK and a crap Spidey pic pasted onto the sides. More
