Exclusive: Ben Stiller On Zoolander 2
News on the return of Derek and Hansel

25 May 2011  |  Written by Ali Plumb

In our new issueout tomorrow, fact fans – there’s the ultimate celebration of Harry Potter, a super Super 8 feature, and a look back on some of the finest films of the past 10 years… including one little comedy that goes by the name of Zoolander.

Speaking exclusively to the man behind Blue Steel himself, we talked to Ben Stiller about the trials and tribulations of bringing the much-loved comedy to the screen, as well as touching on the sequel. That’s right, Zoolander 2, ladies and gentlemen – now with extra-added Magnum.

So, the details: Boasting a strong European vibe, it’ll take place 10 years after Zoolander, with Derek and Hansel cast aside by an industry in which, “ten years is a thousand years. They’re both totally out of it and have to start from scratch.”

“And then there are things set up at the end of the first movie that we’re able to build on, like Derek and Matilda have a son, and Mugatu went to jail. There’s a lot there, I’m excited about the idea of doing it. It feels like it’s getting close to going.”

Close to going, you say? Really? Stuart Cornfeld, Stiller’s producing partner since Zoolander, seems slightly less optimistic about its appearance on the big screen, saying: “It’s hard to get any movie made. It’s frustrating, because I believe the script is incredible. It’s not just putting on those costumes again, it’s a great story to tell.”

“We’ve got what I consider to be the best comedy script I’ve read in years and years, with jokes that haven’t been told before,” he adds.

In other words, it’s all really, really, ridiculously good-looking. For more information on the return of Derek and Hansel, be sure to pick up a copy of our new issue tomorrow when it hits newsstands – or if you’re worried about a stampede at the newsagents (highly understandable), why not order one online

RE: Stiller and sequels...
I'd split the difference costwise and make a sequel incorporating Zoolander and Anchorman. Ron Burgundy and crew cover a fashion show in the seventies, the dry ice is building and building, while Ron is trying his best to chatter through the cock up. The dry ice clears, for some unexplained (and never totally explained) reason it is now 2012, a fashion show in the same site is commemorating the anniversary of the show Ron covered, with a theme of 'Remember Ron Burgundy'' (his colleagues a More
