Joe Cornish's debut Attack The Block is landing soon and we're all just a little excited. The comedian-turned-DJ-turned-Tintin-scribe-turned-director is posed to unleash an alien invasion movie with a difference and the buzz is already set to 'deafening'. The difference? It's not Los Angeles, New York or Paris that those vicious space bastards have picked as their point of attack, but a concreted corner of South London.
Judging by this new promo, the extra-terrestrial nasties have ferocity, as well as a handy A-Z, on their side. We haven't had a proper glimpse yet, but by the looks of things they share a dentist with a certain American werewolf. They're definitely a galaxy away from the shapeshifters or reptilian beasties that have made the long trip from distant galaxies in previous alien invasion movies.
Ranged against them - humanity's first line of defence - is a crew of determined hoodies (John Boyega, Simon Howard, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, and Alex Esmail), with drug-peddler Nick Frost and nurse Jodie Whittaker also manning the rampants. Hold onto your hats for Battle: Elephant & Castle...
Have a look at the trailer, then put a big splodge in your diary next to May 11, the day South London fights back.
I like the tone and the concept of shifting an alien invasion to realistic low key settings. What I'm not feeling is making all the gang hoodies! I think the film would have far more appeal if the kids were not all from the street or were in varying degrees. Just dont like glorifying kids with this state of mind and should show the spectrum of youth specifically of colour as not everyone dresses and talks that way. But these films would have you thinking otherwise... More
