Russell Crowe May Direct 77
He's looking at the cop drama

26 April 2011  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Deadline

Somewhere in his garden at home, Russell Crowe must have a pit where he goes and throws scripts of dramatic films he’s planned to direct, never to be seen again. But despite his history of flirting with, then dumping possible directorial debuts, he’s at it again, circling the idea of picking up the megaphone for 77.

The crime drama has quite the pedigree, since it was birthed by LA Confidential creator James Ellroy and turned into a script by Law & Order writer David Matthews. Taking the viewpoint of two police officers, it connects two events: the unsolved murder of an LAPD officer in 1974 and a famous shootout between the force and the Symbionse Liberation Army (made famous by the kidnapping and eventual recruiting of Patty Hearst. That second incident unravelled in the media spotlight as the standoff saw 400 cops laying siege to the Army’s house, which left several members dead and the place on fire.

Though Crowe has documentary experience with Texas, the film about his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, this still sounds like an ambitious project to pick as the first time behind the camera for a movie, and it remains to be seen if Crowe actually goes for it instead of one of his next acting jobs. According to Deadline, he’s waiting for the latest script draft before making his decision. No pressure, then…
