Eugene Levy Joins Goon
Ice hockey movie, not zombie comic

27 October 2010  |  Written by Sam Toy

If today’s Hobbit news is the world news headline, here is the movie news equivalent of the squirrel that can waterski: Euguene Levy has joined Jay Baruchel’s ice hocky movie, Goon.

There’s no word on who Levy is set to play, but here’s a brief synopsis: “Labelled an outcast by his brainy family,” (have you guessed yet?) “a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under-performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way.”

The Canadian comedian joins a cast that includes fellow American Pie veteran Seann William Scott, as well as Jay Baruchel (who’s also producing and had a hand in adapting the screenplay), spell-check nemesis Liev Schreiber, and Scott Pilgrim’s Alison Pill.

For such a cinematic sport, great ice hockey movies are surprisingly thin on the ground – there really hasn’t been one since 1977’s Slap Shot (no, we haven’t forgotten the okay Rob Lowe / Patrick Swayze drama Youngblood, nor the lacklustre Mystery, Alaska). But with Superbad's Evan Goldberg also on script duties for Goon, fingers crossed that we may be treated to a double-whammy next year, between this and Kevin Smith’s Hurt Somebody.
