Juliette Binoche On 'Nothing' Insult
Gérard Depardieu receives his riposte

31 August 2010  |  Written by Alastair Plumb

Last week, Certified Copy star and highly-regarded French actress Juliette Binoche earned an insult from fellow European acting goliath, Gérard Depardieu.

"Please can you explain to me what the secret of this actress is meant to be? I would really like to know why she has been so esteemed for so many years. She has nothing. Absolutely nothing!"

She has nothing? Well, we're not sure that's true, especially as we definitely do know she has an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The English Patient, César Award for Best Actress (and Venice Film Festival award) for Three Colours Blue, and most recently, the Best Actress award at this year's Cannes for Certified Copy.

Pretty comprehensively not nothing, but there you go. So when we caught up with her to talk about her Cannes-award winner, we asked for her two centimes on the whole 'nothing' debacle, and this, modern French cinema fans, is the result. And in video form, too!

So does Juliette Binoche have 'nothing'? The answer is surely no, but just in case you fancy getting all Depardieu on us, drop us a comment in the box below, why not?

Certifed Copy is out September 3.

Merci Depardieu.
Those who are prissy, hypocritical and squirm at the truth won't like Depardieu's comments - as evidenced. But then it is more than likely they have not seen all of Depardieu's films in contrast to the sugary films of Binoche. If you compare "Chocolat" to Depardieu's "Una Pura formalità" or "Police" it won't take you long to realise that one is an actor while Binoche is window merely dressing - albeit pretty. Besides those who he mentioned as good actors I would add: Sandrine Bonnaire, More

La Binoche
A genuinely erudite & care-free response from the ever charming Ms Binoche. She'll always be one of my fave actresses & forever justifiably in the spotlight for a great many reasons. Seeing as Depardieu looks like a condom full of walnuts & has failed to star in anything of worth for a considerable period I'm disappointed that his comments have been given quite this much attention. He must be a pisshead! More

What happened to manners?
Before watching Binoche's response I was going to say exactly what she herself said at the end- he has the right to dislike her acting style, even ability, but why voice his views in such a vitriolic manner?! Strange. Besides, elle est merveilleuse! More

Adieu Depardieu
Depardieu's unprovoked attack on the beautiful, talented and versatile Ms Binoche is sad, mad and very bad. As an overweight actor going to seed, Depardieu is to be pitied. As a role model for romantic male Parisians, Depardieu should be castrated. Truly La Belle et La Bete. More

triste qu'un si grand parlent si fou
I love Depardieu, he is one of my favourite actors, and Juliette Binoche is an actress I love, so this is depressing. He can only be losing the plot big time in saying these things. Anyone can see that La Binoche is still one of the most versatile, exciting and exceptional women acting in cinema today. Un vrai trésor Français More
