Karl Urban Confirmed For Judge Dredd
And he will NOT remove his helmet

submit to reddit

Karl  Urban has been confirmed for the leading role in Judge Dredd by producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of the new film. Urban had been rumoured for the role already, but in a Movie-Con Q&A this evening the pair confirmed that he has been cast for the film, shooting in South Africa soon.

“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago," said Macdonald. "Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real."

"There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision."

Ladies and gentlemen who are Judge Dredd fans, that sound you hear is music in your ears. More from Movie-Con's panels this evening here, including news on 127 Hours and Never Let Me Go and the batshit insane looking A Town Called Panic, and check back over the weekend for more.

Judge Dredd and Cinema
But another thing is i really think they need to look at another Judge Dredd and get some hot but affordable Actors, and get more into story and action, instead of just action with no story content, otherwise its never gonna make it to cinema and with Karl Urban i doubt they can exspect more than box sales income, id Think dominic Purcell as mention before would make a great Judge Dredd, but if they gonna draw people and get to Cinema they need names like Clive Owen, Russel Crowe, Christian Bal More

I dont hate Sylvester Stallone. in fact i think his become a really good actor and make really good movies now, but if we gonna be honest his A acting performances was really the Rocky movies and the movies after Cop land, it was Cop Land that really started to show his acting skills, i think if he did Judge Dredd now he would perform it a hell of alot better than he did first time. i've got nothing against the old one with sly but it was much to light and happy for judge dredd, i mean there was killing but it didn't shock. Mega city one is a dark and gritty with some insanely violent characters in it that can't be lightened up including dredd who never ever takes his helmet off and never should and i'm for one glad that he won't in this new film and i am glad that it will be an 18 movie. Why does everybody hate the one with Stallone?
No, really, I'm just curious. I never read many of the comics and I'm defnitelty not much into the character of Dredd. I get it, that the movie didn't "get" the original tone that well, but for me the design was great, it was entertaining and I quite liked it. I still do I guess. Call it a guilty pleasure, alhough I'm not exactly sure why it's treated so badly. More

Just stand there and look upset, you dont need to act much (as in Ashton Kutcher depths) enter Vinnie Jones! Who i think should been casted
I personally dont think Karl Urban should be Judge Dredd, he dident really lift Doom very well, even if they movie itself werent that good, id have gone with some like Clive Owen, Dominic Purcell or Jason Stathom, and if Rico is in it maybe Mark Strong or Mickey Rourke As Rico i think they would made for better cast options, Also id focus script on the beginning why they came to be needed, and some the political essence in it along with the action to lift the movie. To be honest does anyone really think that script alone is what make a movie? To think that the script as it is is what will end on the screen is also a tad naive as very few scripts do not go through changes up to and during shooting. The quality of the acting, the direction, the effects and the whole feel of the movie will also play a significant part in the enjoyment of the film. I have seen many films with bad scripts which have in the end been great fun to watch and highly enjoyable. I More

All I'm doing is offering my opinion. Anyway, Dredd is not meant to be realistic. It's sci-fi, exaggerated sci-fi. The character does feature adult themes, fascism, law and order, freedom vs oppression blah blah blah but it's never been done in a particularly realistic way. The idea Dredd is realistic is absurd. You might as well say Chris Nolan's Dark Knight was realistic. A film about a guy dressed up as a bat fighting a guy wearing silly makeup and red lipstick. Yeah, that was reali More

RE: Fingers crossed!
He's not a bad choice, but they really should have chased Aaron Eckhart. Look at the chin! Hes perfect for the role: tp://static.reelmovienews.com/images/gallery/new-a-list er.jpgn looks a little young. I'd always pictured Dredd being quite old, 40's maybe. Still early days and it sounds promising. (ok, so I cant get an image to show.....click the link!) More

RE: Fingers crossed!
"The world really deserves an awesome Judge Dredd movie-lets hope they do it right this time(all the signs are that they will)." Says someone that's not even read the screenplay. I have read it. It's Die Hard set in a MC-1 block. Can you get that through your head! Sigh. Do you have to be so ignorant about this? What signs are that they will do this right? How is Dredd Hard the right way to do Dredd? Tell me. More

RE: Karl Urban Confirmed For Judge Dredd
The screenplay has been leaked - it's easy to find if you search Google. It's a Die Hard/Bullet time rip-off. And if you don't believe me, please read it. John Wagner's words about this being faithful to his source material is ******. He's not being honest. As I say, read the screenplay and then ask yourself "is the best story they can come up with one where Dredd's stuck in a block for the entire film, one which shamelessly steals from Die Hard?" Garland's screenplay is shamelessly unorig More

RE: Karl Urban Confirmed For Judge Dredd
Pretty excited now, Urbans a decent actor & with Wagner involved all the way (hopefully) things are looking up, I'm a bit concerned about the 3D prospect, I dont see the need for gimmicks just make a solid film that'll stand on its own, but then again the prospect of seeing Dredd at the Imax fills me with joy!!! sounds good....
but i guess its early days. the Stallone effort wasn't terrible, just not a true representation of what Judge Dredd is about. for such a young, inexperienced director it was entertaining enough in a blockbuster kind of way More

Looking forward to it.... if they stick to what they say
Urban is a good choice, would've preferred someone like Michael Fassbender for the role, someone who could give the role a bit more meat, but hey! Now lets hope the movie world sits up and takes notice of 2000AD's other brilliant characters such as the ABC Warriors and Slaine... More
