Tarzan Goes 3D
Jungle hero gets new ‘toon

09 August 2010  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Variety

Who says older ideas can’t leap on the 3D bandwagon? It’s not really a surprise to learn that Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan, which has been adapted across all sorts of media in the years since the first book was published in 1912, is now the subject of a 3D animated film from the producers of the Resident Evil franchise.

Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer has nabbed the rights to the novels from Burroughs’ estate and will likely kick off with a new take on Tarzan of the Apes, the tale that introduced the swinging bachelor (and later mate for city girl Jane) to the world.

Surely everyone knows his origin story by now, but just in case: he’s born to a pair of English aristocrats who become stranded in Africa’s dense jungle and then, very inconveniently, die. Our hero is raised by apes and learns the ways of the environment before discovering his true background when he stumbles on his parents’ cabin.

Tarzan is one of those characters who, like Robin Hood, has alwatys been prime source material. He's still probably best known for the 1930s Johnny Weissmuller movies and, to a lesser extent, Greystoke. Disney did decent business with their animated version and Warner Bros. has been trying to get a new film swinging through development for seven years now.

According to Variety, Constantin will work with director/producer and possible future Die Hard villain name Reinhard Klooss, who has just made CG ‘toon Animals United.

Whoopee!
No need to look for new ideas, when you can just keep remaking the old stories again and again and again and again - only this time in CGI-3D. More

Not Again!
I think its stupid to make a new 'Tarzan' movie. Fair enough if it was a live action version but its an animation (CGI i think...correct me if i'm wrong) when Disney made a sel-animation version recently (1999) I love the Disney version and if that did so well and if people love it why feel the need to remake it again in animation form. Its too soona nd the think the form of animation used is stupid as there is already an animation adaptation. More

Borrrring
No problem with another Tarzan effort, but is 3D not the most boring and repetitive 'trick' we've ever had? I've yet to see a movie where 3D truely adds the experience. Yes, certainly, it has at times being exciting- but in the sober light of day, it has only served to mask a movie's weakness. It's all been a gimmick, and to me seems no better than smell-o-vision or high school musicals: a desperate attempt to make something out of nothing. Tarzan would just be the latest victim. More
