NWA Biopic Heads Straight Outta Compton
World Trade Centre writer aboard

When listing the screenwriters you might expect to join a biopic of influential gangsta rap crew NWA, we’re willing to bet that World Trade Centre scribe Andrea Berloff didn’t crop up. But she’s got the job.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Berloff will pen Straight Outta Compton, the story of the group, whose members included Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Easy E, MC Ren and DJ Yella.

Niggas With Attitude rose up from LA’s Compton district in the ‘80s, and made it big with 1988’s Straight Outta Compton, which sold 9 million records (you kids might remember those as some of the funny round things people used for music before iPods and downloads happened along).

With their success came rifts, with Cube in particular leaving over royalty issues and waging rap wars with the remaining members. But since Easy E died, the surviving members of the group have been easing back onto good terms.

Cube is producing the film, which does make us wonder whether it’ll take his side more (hope not), but there’s no word on a director or cast yet.

Can't Wait!
I really hope they do a good job on this, getting a director shouldn't be a problem ( John Singleton?) but casting won't be easy. Hard to see who could play who, gotta be solid well known young actors, Tyrese Gibson? Terry Crews? Chiwetel Ejiofor? Freddy Rodriguez ( Yella)? James Woods as Jerry Heller? Great story to tell. NWA was a vital contribution to the world of gangsta rap music - and probably the most purest - it wasn't always about the pursuit of the superficial or vices - but rebelling against the suppressive status-quo. Too many commercial rappers today have taken the formula and watered it down into clichés and it becomes a sensationalist tool to generate buzz for the artist. The film has a lot of potential, and not just with Ice Cube's storyline but also Eazy-E's death from AIDS, Dr. Dre rising a More

Set expectations to shite
I have a bad feeling about this. There has only ever been one half decent hip hop film, and that's 8 Mile. Even that doesn't hold up to repeat viewings. Notorious was TERRIBLE, I think because of Puffy's influence. The involvement of O'Shea Jackson this time does not fill me with confidence. Now, if it was a Spike Lee joint being completely independently produced, count me in. I wonder if they'll have 'No Vaseline' as the closing titles music? More

YES
Love NWA, check out the album Straight Outta Compton, especially the title track, Fuck Tha Police, and Express Yourself. If you're not into gangsta rap, try these three anyway - I wasn't, and I really liked these tunes More
