Star Wars Blu-Rays Confirmed
The force will be with us again

19 April 2010  |  Written by James White  |  Source: IGN

submit to reddit

File this one under Least Surprising News Ever: George Lucas’ team have finally confirmed that they’re hard at work at releasing the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray.

It’s not really shocking – “head of fan relations” Steve Sansweet said they were considering it last year, dropping hints that it would be the ultimate set.

Fade cut to this weekend, and IGN got to talk to Sansweet, who blabbed they were actively toiling away on it, but distanced himself from his previous “ultimate” hype.

"We have been at work for a couple of years working on – I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff – but a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We're finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about… there are some real treasures."

Isn’t it funny how they can keep “discovering” new stuff just when there’s the chance of some cash to be made from fans looking to own the series. Wonder what they’ll find for the inevitable 3D home release?

Sansweet wouldn’t be locked down to a firm date, but The Digital Bits' source Jawas are whispering that October 2011 is a possible date.

Thanks to the team at Collider for the spot.

i dont know exactly what people are moaning about, you dont have to buy it on blu ray, most films are being released on blu ray now so why moan that some of the best films of all time (at least the original trilogy) are going to be released on this format, im pretty sure more people would be annoyed if they never come out on blu ray. Yes yes but what I really want on blu ray is Indiana Jones. More

Jeez. What has a film collector to do? I first bought the original trilogy on VHS, then pan-and-scan Laserdiscs, then on widescreen NTSC Laserdiscs; the 'Definitive Collection' Laserdisc set (that's got brilliant extras); the Special Edition PAL Laserdisc box set: the Special Edition DVDs, and the Limited Edition not-buggered-about-with original 1977 version DVDs. George, please. You've milked me more than The Beatles... Oh, alright then. Hit me again. More

RE: Bound To Happen
So why is it that everytime Lucas puts something out he's always money grabbing. It's ok for film studios to release countless version of films on DVD but when George does it, he's a money grabber. Hey this guy spends his own money on his films, he had the foresight to get the toy deals of fox. Good luck to the guy. If he makes money then he just ploughs it into new stuff like the Clone Wars and the upcoming live series.   For those of you who say he raped my childhood no he didn More

as soon as blu ray was announced as a format this boxset was bound to materialise. why the hate for lucas? am sure he and fox came to decision on this after seeing blu ray sales so far. More

RE: Star Wars Blu-Rays Confirmed
I never got them on DVD as I was waiting for a six film set, so if they release the Blu Rays as a big box set, I'd be sorely tempted. If I had a Blu Ray Player. Or a HDTV. Or any money. More

You can just imagine it can't you? "ooooh, george, look what we've just found in that box of crap at skywalker ranch , it's an unused scene from episode II..... maybe we can now make your definitive edition bluray box set and sell it for a small lottery win" The guy is a money junkie, we have known this for years, so why do we act so surprised that yet more extra scenes are discovered, and just before a bluray release? I may go to the same film/business school as mr Lucas, as he seems More

I might watch it on VHS again!
got an old player in the garage, still got my original copy and the rejigged ones so just might give it a go. Hey! I don't even own an iphone - nor do I want to! by the way, I do actually like a lot of the digital universe that is oru world - just don't like being strong armed into relenting and once again purchasing the same movies. and no amount of 'unseen footage' will make me think otherwise. love to see a blu ray of Big Wednesday... anyone got John Milius's number? don't like it? don't buy it.
We all know that Mr Lucas is robbing us blind. I'm a big star wars fan, but with the dvd upscaling feature on most DVDs, this really is not worth my money. I won't be buying it, as someone else said, there will be a 3D version a few years after that. Peter Jackson will probably do the same with Lord Of The Rings too! More

RE: :) why!
Is there any reason why lucas has redo the sixology in blu ray? How much more can he fit into the films he already brung out the redone 4,5 and 6 on dvd and many including me were disappointed at some of the things he added or changed, me personally was a bit annoyed at lucas taking out luke's scream as he fell down the shaft at the end of empire strikes back and the changing of boba's voice to resemble the actor who played jango's. But is blu ray anything special i ain't buying anything in b More

I know some will disagree, but is it too much to ask for one whole box set of all 6 films? I was planning to buy the boxsets you mention tey are indeed quite cheap at the minute and especially the blu-rays aren't coming out for at least a year and a half! More

Dislike SW
I was an avid fan since 77, and since episode I, II & III I have lost interest in the whole saga. I still like Ep.IV & V, but that's it and couldn't give rats ass about Blu Ray or 3-D version anymore, its gone too commercial, sold out and raped. More

Lets hope they have the same luck as the old Bonds films.

RE: Star Wars Blu-Rays Confirmed
So basically the consensus is it’s a rip off and we’re are all being conned by being provided the opportunity to buy what is, for many, a much loved series of movies on Blu-Ray? It’s odd, because I just popped over to an alternate universe where a similar empire article was published with the title: “Lucasfilms announces no plans to release Star Wars on Blu-Ray”   It’s amazing how few responses there were containing phrases like “good, I don’t want a new version anyway” or “fantastic th More

RE: RE:
L: Mr Grizzly One of the reasons I still haven't bought them on DVD is that they've still yet to release all 6 films together in one set... now they're releasing not-the ultimate Blu-ray set?! see no real point in this argument when there are 2 great boxsets; one of the originals with both the theatrical and remastered editions, and the other with the 2 disc editions of the prequels and if you shop around you can get them relatively cheaply. Either way, I'll be getting these on More

Hmm, wonder if this is just the start of several Blu Ray editions
Like others I'm a longtime fan of the original trilogy, not so much the prequels but they'd still look fantastic on Blu so from a technical pov I'll pick up all 6. However if they pull the same stunt as the Rings trilogy I'll be pissed off - I know it's a business but releasing several Blu versions to cash in is just a slap in the face. I'm planning to pick up Avatar on Blu at some point but read that the first disc released has bugger all extras - considering it was a long time making and us More

RE: I am so over Star Wars
There's an easy solution DON'T FUCKING BUY THEM.  George Lucas hasn't got a fucking gun to your head.  If after all your moaning about him ripping you off and brining out different versions, if you then go out and buy them all that shows is you are weak willed and a twat. Personally i will buy them because they will be ace on Blu Ray. More

Confirmation of what we already knew but no news as to when we could expect the discs. Kind of pointless article really but it gives the saddo's a chance to blog their BS about 'having to buy' it again. I specifically like the mention 'RETURN OF THE JEDI 30th Anniversary Edition! ' I didn't notice any special releases for the Star Wars 30th or TPM’s 10th and I have not noticed any planned releases for Empire's 30th and come to think of it I don't recall that many re releases on DVD. They come up with BluRay2, or SuperHD or TurboNutterVision.
