Scott's Alien Prequel Will Be 3D
They're coming outta the goddamn screen!

08 March 2010  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Shadowlocked

So this is what Ridley Scott meant by "a brand new box of tricks". Art direction guru Roger Christian (Star Wars, Alien, we'll be kind and not mention that he directed Battlefied Earth. Oh bugger...) has revealed to Shadowlocked.com that the upcoming Alien prequel / reboot / whatever we're calling it, will be comin' atcha in 3D.

"Ridley's doing the next Alien in 3D," he says. But there's more: "Ridley told me some of his ideas. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there's ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I'm hoping he'll revive another three."

Shadowlocked make much of that "another three" business, although it sounds to our ears as if a trilogy is a casual hope on the part of the speaker, and not a plan by Sir Ridders. But whatever, whether or not you still think 3D is a gimmick, the prospect of the technology being put to use on the Alien is an enticing one. For the most part we've had big, bright, colourful 3D so far. We've certainly not yet seen it used on a Giger-ish nightmare.

As a tentpole sci-fi 3D project, Alien 5 has the potential to be a sort of Avatar in negative. The immersive possibilities that come with the perspective depth of the new 3D, as well as the boo! potential of the audience getting a facehugger in the face, has got us very interested indeed.

Christian isn't actually involved in the film (yet), but says "if ever I went back to designing, the only film I would ever want to design is Alien, if Ridley re-did it," which sounds a bit like an application. "3D is brilliant for horror", he concludes. We've only had shallow slasher fare to test that theory so far, but Alien has the potential to really prove him right. Don't you agree?

RE: RE:
I depends on how the 3D will be used. Will it be the kind of 3D that constantly tries to shove pointed objects in your face (like Bloody Valentine) or will it be like UP or Avatar where (for the most part) it simply adds another layer to the film (of course Cameron couldn't resist the urge of throwing grenades at the audience from time to time).   Films of the second categorie have the tendancy to work just as well in 2D (I never saw UP in 3D and still love it to death) whereas More

I find the Ridley Scott part of a new Alien movie far more excitng than the 3D part. But let's say it's a great film and the 3D works - it's gonna be fucking scary!!! Can you imagine those alien jaws snapping at your popcorn More

RE: Scott's Alien Prequel Will Be 3D
Hooray! The world of differing opinions lives on!pologies if I over-gloomed prospects for a Scott Alien 3D movie. We obviously can't all agree, but I based my comments on 30 years of watching 3D movies in their various stages of development as they kept coming back to the cinema with headlines about how much better the tech was than the previous wave of 3D that came and went. And to date, the most heart stopping moment I've had during a 3D cinema viewing was the sudden mangling of the soun More

DId 2D grosses just drop sharply around here?
Unless it's a fully CGI flick, adding 3D to characters or even objects can make them look conversely flat and unreal (I''m looking at your Superman Returns) undermining the efforts of the FX team to make us suspend our disbelief by reminding us it's all effects and 'show'. I fear that's what will happen here. More

In 3D, No One Can See You Scream...
With Ridley back behind the cameras shooting it in 3D, we can rest assured it will be visually astonishing. If they take the time to get the script right, this could really be something special. At least it won't be garbage like Alien Vs Predator: Requiem. More

With all due respect, that's a fucking bullshit argument. The one and only reason the studios are going gaga over 3D is it gives cinema something to offer something TV can't currently do and therefore a reason to see films on the big screen. It has absolutely fuck all to do with quality of the films. It's business, pure and simple, and the film industry has, since day one promoted the WOW WOW WOW factor. It's also the reason the flicks have offered 3D as the big wow factor several t More

RE: Game over man......Game over!!!!
As a prequel, I feel Alien 5 is destined to suck, unless it has an AMAZING story beyond anything I can possibly imagine. And I can imagine quite a bit. As 3D, it's already dead in the water to me. When will it be understood that the all powerful technology automatically equating to better movies is bollocks, just as it was when digital cameras were supposed to make everything better (what you point the camera AT remains more crucial than the level of image clarity). Horror films, part More
