Captain America To Be Cast Soon?
Announcement 'within two weeks'

04 February 2010  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Sci Fi Wire

submit to reddit

Chalk this up as more of a news placeholder than news itself, but Captain America director Joe Johnston told Sci-Fi Wire that we can expect an announcement on the shield-wielding super-soldier in the next two weeks.

"We have a very short list, but we're still juggling actors here. I'd say within the next couple of weeks we'll have ourselves a Captain America, I hope," Johnston told the site, during publicity duties for The Wolfman.

Shooting's due to start in June, possibly in the UK*, and Johnston also discusses the character as a whole at the link above. So who are we looking at for the part, people? And how excited are you?

*Wait, isn't that unpatriotic?

JOHN BARROWMAN!!!
Apparently the yanks are loving ol' JB in Torchwood at the moment and as he's going into Desperate Housewives very soon this will give him the star status over there. And I think the Avengers will be much better with the odd show-tune thrown in. Plus he'd be able to sink cosmopolitans with Stark, tell filthy gay jokes to Fury (he needs to laugh once in a while) and he'd give Hulk one hell of a dramatic slap across the face. And here's teh best bit...He could rename himself, wait for it....CAMP More

Michael Trucco
Jeremy Renner is going to be Hawkeye in Thor Alexander Skarsgård SHOULD have been Thor If you want someone from BSG, it should be Michael Trucco (the guy who plays Anders) Nathan Fillion is way to funny to be CA - he should be a supporting Avenger if anything What happened to the rumours about Will Smith? What about Ryan Reynolds - he only has 3 comic book characters to his name... Actually, I'm really starting to like this Michael Trucco idea... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0873998/ More

Jeremy Renner...
...that is all. More

Overlooked-Chris Pine
The guy who plays Captain America has to have a big enough name/screen presence to command around guys like RDJ and go toe-to-toe with Edward Norton (or whoever). In my opinion, Chris Pine (Star Trek) finally has the star power and the look to do it. He's not overly cocky: he's an actor. And just film in two parts: Steve Rogers and Captain America. Let him go through the 300 treatment to bulk up for the role and honestly? He's all set. More

I think Alexander Skarsgård would be a great choice. He's the best thing in True Blood and he showed he can do the american GI in Generation Kill More

Why not choose..
an unknown or less known actor. Try something different for a change? How about, Tahmoh Penikett (Helo on BSG, Paul B. on Dollhouse)? More

Please god no
Not Matthew Maconawassit? Although i see your point. Nathan Fillion just isn't a big enough pull for the film, but you can't help but like the guy. More

Hmmmm
Am I the only person who thinks Sam Worthington is a rubbish actor? I dont think he would be good as Cap either. Nathan Fillion I love to bits but not sure I could imagine him playing him. I hate to say it but.... Mathew Mcona... however you spell it? *prepares to be flamed* More

Toby McGuire for Cap'n America. He has experience of a franchise and free of Spiderman contract. It could work. Maybe. Kinda. Ok. I'll go........ More

For a real deal
They need need to do a tour of psychiatric wards and find a compulsive masterbator. It would fit the title and he could do a double salute More

I still think Sam Worthington is a likely candidate
Ignoring the fact that he's Australian (hopefully people could see beyond a non-American being cast) I think he probably fits the bill from character and business perspective: 1. Action man credentials soon to be sealed with Clash of The Titans following Avatar and T4 so he could probably make a convincing super-soldier 2. He has his critics but I think he's a decent actor (one of the better things about T4 and was great in Somersault) and I think his role in Avatar has aspects of what I'd More

RE:
Damn, Eckhart would be perfect looks-wise and if anyone could be believeable spouting crusading, super-patrotic dialogue it's him. But he is too old. I nominate myself however, as the pre super soldier, weedy Steve Rogers. Then using mo-cap technology I can be transformed into a 6'4'' perfect specimen of human fitness and skill (gonna need a looooot of RAM to accomplish that though) More

Posted by Rain Dog at 10:38 on 04 February 2010 | Report This Post

I think that Eckhart is too old for the role (although would look the part in the uniform). Steve Rogers is not much older than a Teen when he becomes a Super Soldier. I don't want some high school musical child to play him, but as The Wasp once said " Steve you look like a Calvin Klein model and talk like my grandfather" More

that Eric Dane is on the list. And John Cena and Aaron Eckhart isn't. And that they make a good choice. More

Posted by Gerlach at 08:58 on 04 February 2010 | Report This Post

My excitement hinges on who they cast.
Really not sure. If Two Face really did die at the end of The Dark Knight then Eckhart's your man. Him aside....not too sure. Could Jeremy Renner's Oscar nod have bumped him up a grade from Hawkeye? More
