Michael Bay Talks Transformers 3
Expect fewer explosions?

18 January 2010  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: The Los Angeles Times

submit to reddit

If we were to tell you that Michael Bay was determined to dial it back for Transformers 3 and focus on character, you'd probably laugh - but that's exactly what he has claimed in a recent interview with the LA Times.

After claiming that this film won't be as "robot-heavy" and will (gasp) feature fewer explosions, Bay went on to say that, "There will be a nice crescendo ending,” Bay said. “It gets much more into the robot character. The last time you kind of met a few of the robots; this time you’re gonna get a much cooler landscape.”

It's tempting to speculate that "landscape" here might refer to alien worlds, prehistoric Dino-bot territory (only kidding!) or at the very least the Decepticon's spaceship the Nemesis, but that hardly squares with the less-robot-heavy idea. Then, it wouldn't be the first time that Michael "No, Megatron isn't in the sequel" Bay has been less than accurate about his plans.

Frankly, don't start thinking that this is going to be the big-budget character piece that Bay hints at, with Optimus going through a mid-life crisis or Bumblebee learning a valuable lesson about women or something. "Fewer explosions" still leaves room to blow up at least four national monuments and crash through sixteen lesser buildings, while inflicting 80% collateral damage on the surrounding areas. And even less "robot heavy" could give us a good ten or twelve of the damn things.

But with details about the summer 2011 release still thin on the ground, this may give you speculation fodder to be going on with, so post your thoughts below.

RE: RE:
Yaawwwnnn. I'd be extremely happy if Michael Bay followed through on his promises and quit filmmaking. He might be a fantastic plumber but the man cannot direct traffick let alone anything close to coherent. More

RE:
I would like them to concentrate on a bit more character development like the first one, instead of Shia LaBouf and Megan Fox running everywhere from giant CGI decepticons. Leave out the little stupid annoying robots too, just have Megatron smash them with him foot or something. Let Megatron be the main bad guy instead of 50 bad guy robots like ROTF. The second one wasn't bad but it wasn't excellent either, The first one was excellent though. Bay not blowing as much shit up? Yeah right, he's k More

Don't get me wrong, I like a nice bit of shit blowing up as much as the next twenty something male but TF2 was a mess. Yes the FX are amazing but really, what does that matter when the action scenes are so muddled you can't see what's going on and who's fighting who. My main problem with it was that there were too many totally redundant scenes and characters. I mean, the bit when his mum gets stoned on hash cakes is painfully unfunny and adds nothing to the film save for the fact that I really w More

cybertron and unicron maybe even galvatron?
i think as a cartoon goes, the original transformers movie had some good ideas( as well as some screwed up ones, lol) but unicron would have to be more than what galactacus was to fantastic four 2 for it to get the right reaction. would be nice to have some kind of insight on the rest of the transformers race as well. RE: Michael Bay Talks Transformers 3
Even though, I am rather the Bayhem fan, I'd want to see him just take it back and actually get down with the characters. I mean after all, they believed their race was almost extinct and then the Fallen returned. So, y'know maybe we should go learn more about i] world instead of ours. It'd make sense for them to go back and try and restore what is left.   And I agree, get rid of Megan. She doesn't deserve to be recast into the film, not after all the sh*t she gave Bay and the crew. T More

Less robots would be a good thing
Seriously, the second one got so hard to follow. There were simply too many characters that I really didn't give a fuck when any one died. Cut back on the number of robots and focus a little more on them so we care about the fights. The FX are amazing and the fights are enjoyable to watch but add the character and it will add a new level of enjoyment to them. Like the one at the end of the first film, that was a good set of characters and was an amazing scene. More

dinobots?
why are people so against the idea of dinobots? i know they wouldn't make sense in the current movies but if they had a good backstory? read a transformers comic recently called Spotlight which provides a decent backstory (couldn't be bothered to go through it...wiki it). More

Just what I thought was missing
I barely made it through ROTF with it's unfathomable, hole-filled plot and what appeared to be contract necessary appearances from redundant humans. So a bit more character & story is welcome. Although, to be fair, the Freeway Fight of TF1 and Forest Fight of TF2 are the best parts of the film franchise; and they are not exactly character development. Can't we please have both? More

I think the whole series needs a makeover already. More serious, less goofiness and cheese. Oh what do I know though, nothing! Tell him he can do what he wants, he will anyway. Would quite like it if he did blow the world up actually. Not in real life though. More

Bayhem is fine!!
Just get rid of Ladyboy Megan Fox!!!! She is ugly!! Bring back Isabel Lucas she was hot even though the whole reason of her being in the film was stupid!!! I mean if the decepticons can disguise themselves as humans then why bother with the cars and shit!! Anyhoo I quite enjoyed ROTF even though it is bat shit crazy!! Bring on the 3rd and let BAYHEM commence!!! More

RE: Bring the bayhem i say!
It would be nice if he pulls the camera back a little bit like the forrest fight scene and I like the sound of their being a bit more character development. But ROTF has more explosions/bang for your buck than the original but I wouldn't say the at the original was exactly FX shy would you? More

Bring the bayhem i say!
If this is to be the 3rd in a triology(mind the spellin) then NO to less Bayhem! This needs to be bigger than anything b4! More robots, more fighting and more Bayhem! Use this one to introduce unicorn and then make another 3 films!! Yes, its my own bayhem wet dream More

Can't wait.....(no really!)
I really enjoyed the second one (don't give a toss what anyone else said/says) I was a big fan of the original cartoons and the sequel was very similar in theme and tone to the original series. I like the casting, I didn't like that Jetfire had a cockeny accent or that Sam didn't want to have Bumblebee with him - I mean come on how cool would that be? There's no way I'd not want to be involved or not take Bumblebee with me. Bring it on is all I can say. More

bring the motherfucking Bayhem
I really like Michael Bay - he's a proper showman and that includes teasing and misleading his audience. Unlike Eli Roth, who tries to do the same thing but ends up pissing everyone off with his shitty, much-less-than-promised films. And Bay's razy enough to take the piss out of himself in those US Tivo adverts. More

The Military, The High School and The Plothole.
Revenge of the Fallen was quite enjoyable on the whole, but too many 'military-porn' shots slowed it down towards the end. And why was the matrix of leadership needed to reactivate Prime when a piece of all-spark would do is beyond me and the cluncky change in music from thematic to high school soap rock also took a star out of the ratings for me. But the Prime versus 3 decepticons battle was worth the entry fee for me alone (love the comics when I was a kid). Just a good solid adventure with no More

I don't care, as long as its better than the last one!
I was REALLY looking forward to the second film and to say I was dissapointed is an under statement. As it is I could'nt give a monkey's uncle if there is more of this, or less of that. Just make it as good at the first. The KEY element to ALL this is STORY. Get that right and we know Bay can make a visually good film. More

RE:
"less Megan Fox ogling would suffice"   Come on, there's nothing wrong with Megan Fox bending over the odd motorcycle here or there, if anything there should be more. I was absolutely delighted to see a rival blonde Meg-alike in ROTF until it turn out she/it was a decepticon, even then i still allowed my self to fantasize about getting jiggy with a sexy alien robot posing as a human, on the condition she/it promised not to penetrate me with that nasty sharp android tail thing. He's lying jis pants off. He's going to blow up a planet this time cause it's really the onlything he hasn't done yet so i'd say expect unicron and for all of the robots to "bond" and save they're home world. and then all go hand and hand into the sunset. also expect so see shia le Biouf in some sort of cyber booster suit. To be fair the only way to go now is to crank it up to 11. Im one of the few people who liked Revenge of the Fallen, it was twice as good as the first one so slowing things down a little makes no sense at all. More
