Kevin Smith Prepares To Hit Somebody
Hockey movie next for director?

05 January 2010  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Viewaskewniverse

This seems to have entirely passed us by over the festive season, but the word on the street (or indeed, from the horse's mouth) is that Kevin Smith's next project is an Ice Hockey movie, based on a novelty song by Warren Zevon.

Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song) is the touching tale of a Canadian farmboy who dreams of stardom with a stick and a puck, but has no discernible talent in that direction. He's good at hitting people though, and the big teams are "always in need of a goon"...

As of last month, Smith had "pages and pages of notes" and was "fucking poised to go". Hockey films however - even the great ones like Slapshot - could not be said to have a solid gold performance history at the box office, so the erstwhile Silent Bob is sanguine about the scale of the film's ambition: "you go in with tailored expectations. You know you're kind of dealing with a specific audience, so you know, we'll probably make it on the inexpensive side."

Films based on songs are also treacherous territory (Convoy anyone?) but Smith is confident that he can pull this one off. It's a movie he "sees in his head and feels in his heart": "it's gonna hit you in a very personal place."

Give the song a listen here, and tell us if you think it's movie material.

Here's the pulse. Here's your finger...
...far from the pulse jammed straight up your ass! Say, would you like a chocolate covered pretzel? I actually had no idea this was in the pipeline either, I just can't resist a Kevin Smith quote. More

Do it.
This film is a direct result of "Zack and Miri" making less money than was hoped for - resulting in Smith being stoned for months on end - resulting in him watching Wayne Gretsky DVDs all the time - resulting in an obsession! Still, Smith always does his best when he's working from material close to him (Clerks, Dogme, Chasing Amy) and so this could work very well. And hey, what's wrong with making a film about Hockey? It would be... you know... something new. More

RE: Kevin Smith Prepares To Hit Somebody
I agree this is old news... However if Kevin can pull off a film that shows the world just how good hockey is (the most underrated sport in the world) I can't wait for it. Kevin's a true hockey fan who can get to the heart of a good story, I have no doubt! And personally I can't get enough of him talking about The Great One - anyone who appreciates sport should too! RE: Kevin Smith Prepares To Hit Somebody
Really couldn't give a crap about any new projects from Smith, especially when it's a movie based around Hockey. He has been banging on about fucking Wayne Gretsky in his Smodcasts forever and even extended it to his UK Q&A's for around an hour of talk time. Who gives a shit? So boring More
