Pack Your Rucksacks For Blair Witch 3
Eduardo Sanchez hikes back into town

02 November 2009  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: The Toronto Sun

No great surprise this, but with zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon Paranormal Activity cleaning up at the box office, the creator of a certain other zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon from a decade ago, is talking a revisit. Anyone for Blair Witch 3?

"I wouldn't be completely honest if I said I wasn't jealous of Paranormal Activity," Eduardo Sanchez, co-creator of The Blair Witch Project (along with Daniel Myrick) tells the Toronto Star. "There's the feeling that, I could have done this... I know how to make these films. To me it's like, man, maybe I should go back and kind of milk this one more time."

The original Blair Witch, as any fule kno, took Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C Williams and a camcorder, dumped them in the woods to improvise, and scared the crap out of them for a week. The resulting film, presented as the found footage of a group of missing hikers, raked in a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide, and led to the rush-release of Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, which immediately killed the nascent franchise stone dead. To be fair though, Myrick and Sanchez had no part in the ill-fated (and completely bollocks) sequel. Their mooted Blair Witch 3 will, if it happens, ignore it completely.

Having seen Cloverfield, Sanchez now believes the first-person shakycam schtick has been done to death, and is talking instead about a technique he refers to as "mixed first person", pointing to District 9 as an example of what he means.

"It seems like doing exactly the same thing as before would be a mistake," he says, although the treatment he and Myrick have prepared does contain non-leading roles for the original stars.

"We're at the step right now where we're about to pitch it to Lionsgate, who own the rights," Sanchez concludes. "They'll either greenlight it or completely squash it." Fingers crossed, readers? Or are you sending Sanchez off to stand in the corner?

RE: What's the point?
Good for them. They probably made a good amount off Blair Witch but not any where near as much as everyone else did. It's not as if their careers bloomed after it either if they want to do it good luck to them, i havn't seen BW2 so i'm hoping this could happen. I read an interview where they said they pitched it and lionsgate didn't seem to want to do it so maybe it won't happen. More

What's the point?
Seriously what is the point of making The Blair Witch 3?? The other 2 totally sucked. To be honest if they made it they would be wasting money which could go towards making a much better film than that piece of bulls**t. More

The Charlatan Returns
It's probably taken this clown ten years to spend the mountain of cash he made from ripping off the public last time. He hasn't been heard from since as he has no talent whatsoever. He's not a director, he's an editor. They gave the actors vague ideas for scenes to improvise and cut it together (the actors did virtually all the work). That's not directing, that's editing. He can piss off back down that shithole he's been hiding in for a decade. That one-trick pony won't be fleecing me agai More

I reckon the guy at the end of the first one was just taking a pee in the corner......still the scariest bit of the film. Why, when I read this article did I recall the lyrics of that horrible Abba song ' MONEY MONEY MONEY, Must be MONEY....' . More

Do it as a Musical!
Get the Kidz from High School Musical and have some big song and dance numbers "Nobody puts me in the corner", "Which Witch is Which?" are only 2 of the numbers that could pepper this sure-fire hit! I think my pills are wearing off......... More

Oh my goodness. If this goes ahead (with any relation to the Blair back story prequel idea -- although, I'm sure whatever they've got up their horrid little sleeves will more than suffice), it will be the film I am looking forward to most of whichever year it is to be released, and will be at the top of my Movie Priority List (TM) all of the way until that year comes. Excitement abounds. More
