Steve Carr To Direct Short Circuit
Paul Blart director boards robot remake

27 October 2009  |  Written by Chris Hewitt  |  Source: Variety

Good news, everyone – Steve Carr, director of those comedic colossi, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Daddy Day Care, Rebound and Dr. Dolittle 2, will next focus his considerable talents on the much-needed and eagerly-anticipated remake of Short Circuit. Yay and, if you have the time, woo.

The John Badham-directed original, which seems to assumed cult classic status over the years despite not being very good, was about a robot named Johnny 5 who is imbued with sentience by a rogue lightning bolt. On the run from the military, Johnny 5 bonds with Ally Sheedy, and hilarious adventures are had by all.

The Carr-directed remake retains essentially the same premise, although this time – for added emotional impact – Johnny 5 will bond with a lonely young boy. Christ almighty.

To say our expectations for this movie have plummeted seems a little harsh. After all, they weren’t that high to begin with. And it could be a lot worse – after all, Carr’s movies aren’t awful, just blandly amiable and instantly forgettable. We expect this new Short Circuit to be more of the same.

Dan Milano wrote the script for the Dimension film – his background on Robot Chicken is relatively encouraging. But if his script has a line even half as good as ‘Hey laser lips, your mamma was a snowblower’, we’ll be astonished.

A Friend Called 5
Just to be pedantic, the robot wasn't called Johnny 5 until Short Circuit 2. He was only known as Number 5, in a very Gary Numan like way, in the first film. And as for a remake? Well, the original was a "Sunday afternoon (couldn't find anything else in Blockbuster)" job and I'm sure the new one will be much the same, only this time 5 will be CGI...can't wait! More

RE: Steve Carr To Direct Short Circuit
Oh no, it's sacrilege, it's a crime against nature and all that is pure and decent, yadda yadda yadda..   Actually I don't really give a shit, I never liked the flick, even as a kid. More

RE: Short Circuit
I like Short Circuit as well. Don't see how they could improve on such a flawless piece of work. John Badham's an underrated Director actually - Short Circuit, Stakeout and War Games are all personal favourites. More

Oh dear...... Sorry, was i supposed to bloat this out with how great the 80's movies were? Or state how because this is a 'reboot' (not a remake?) it will somehow be the godfather for 2000 generation? once again..... Oh dear...... More

More than a Robot. More than a robot to me.
What do you mean 'not very good'? Short Circuit is a great example of those 80s family movies that they generally can't seem to nail these days. Screw this remake (along with all the rest) I want a Short Circuit 3 - double-billed with a Last Starfighter 2 if possible please. More

New Rule
People should be banned from saying "This movie is the beginning of the end" or "This movie will bring about the apocalypse". I'm guilty of doing this myself a few times, and if it happened every time I did, the world should've ended several times over the past few years thanks to Paul W. S. Anderson alone. We get it. It's going to be shit. More

Actually Empire Johnny 5 was NOT in Short Circuit.
If I recall correctly he was plain ol' "Number 5" back in Short Circuit. It was only in SC2 that he adopted the ridiculous moniker "Johnny 5" and started wearing a scarf. On another note, I could not be less excited about this movie. Unless they bring back Fisher Stevens and his amazing accent, of course... More
