Blomkamp's Next Sci-Fi Is A Go Project
Due to start shooting next year

23 October 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Variety

Neil Blomkamp, who blew everyone away this year with District 9, has just had the green light for a second science-fiction film, set to shoot in the middle of next year. Media Rights Capital will produce the story, which will have a budget that's higher than District 9's $30 million but still low by sci-fi standards.

Blomkamp himself described the film as "hopefully commercial, but it is very much a singular film, that comes directly from me. It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from District 9, but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm." He's now set to start writing the film and designing the digital effects pretty much today, so that the film can meet its deadline.

This is not to say that Blomkamp won't be going back to do a District 9 sequel at some point in the near future, but it won't be his next film. At this point, we're excited to see what he can come up with. We hope it has tentacles.

exited
if his next film is anywhere near as exiting or inventive as district 9 it should be well worth looking forward to. also i think blomkamp should be the man to remake robocop. he would make a fantastic job of it. MNU to OCP. More

Glad to see he's being allowed artistic freedom for his next project, well done to the guy. Nice to see he's staying relatively low budget as well! The guy's an absolute legend. . More

Really?...
Well, he honestly didn't blow ME away with District 9... ... Isn't the point of lower budget film-making to achieve freedom from studio control, to achieve artistic freedom?... if so, Why was District 9 so generic? More

It's people like this guy that make the movies so exciting. It's great that there are people out there who are focussed on originality and not just remaking any old crap... More

Looking forward to it . . .
I'll be agreeing with the general consensus here. Blompkamp did a good job on District 9 and I look forward to seeing what else he can pull out the bag that is not District 9 related. More

Glad to see he's doing what he wants rather than being handled the reins on the latest franchise or being bullied into fast-tracking District 10. Looking forward to seeing whatever he pulls out the bag. More
