Exclusive: Michael Caine On Inception
Just a morsel, mind

21 October 2009  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen

The Los Angeles leg of Christopher Nolan's none-more-secret sci-fi Inception is underway and Sir Michael Caine, one of the esteemed names on the call-sheet, has defied the omerta to reveal a snippet or two on his role in the movie.

"I play a professor who's teaching a guy science," Sir Michael told of us of his fourth Nolan collaboration. "It's Leonardo diCaprio. He's going off to do a science project and he speaks to me before he goes."

While the great man wouldn't elaborate on exactly what that project involves (and we're not expecting frog dissection) he had warm words for his co-star's performance. "Leo is great. I've had a day with him [in London], he's wonderful."

Veiling proceedings in a covertness not seen since the heyday of Secret Squirrel, Nolan is keeping even his cast members in the dark on how the plot, set "within the architecture of the mind", will play out. Say Caine: "They wouldn't let me read the script. I only got my page. They're all very secretive!"

Judging by the teaser trailer, the cryptic carry-ons are shaping up into something special. That Nolan teamsheet in full: Sir Michael, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Tom Berenger, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy. Might be worth looking out for a cameo by Lord Lucan too.

Your Comments

Thought the teaser trailer was pointless and the people who started clucking about it a bit over-eager however what a great cast. Tom Berenger! Thought he'd disappeared into a cavern of his own mind. Great to see him back. Well done to Nolan for casting him. And Joseph Gordon Leavitt as Joker? I think that's a good call Scruffylooking.... More

Need.To.See.This.
I'm really looking forward to Inception and atcully, without knowing a lot about it, makes it even more exicting to go and see it. It's got a brilliant cast, directed by a extraorindary man and it's no doubt it's going to be a great film. But waiting for it is indeed torture. More

RE: Joker
L: Hawros No, nobody else thinks that. It's a really silly thing to say. Film's gonna be cracking tho... sp; To be fair to scruffylooking, that's what a lot of Bat-fans are hypothesising. Levitt's been mentioned like that for nearly 2 years now. Don't see it happening myself, but let them hope.   Looking forward to Inception. I do hope though that it doesn't become world-within-a-world-within-a-dream-within-a-mind style trickery. More

Joker
Looking forward to this film despite the lack of information. Anything Nolan works on is worth taking the time to see. Does anyone else think this could be Gordon-Levitt's audition to replace to replace Heath as the Joker? They look similar, are around the same age and were apparently good mates off screen as well. This is torture. If the film only lives up to half of the current level of anticipation, we'll get a proper masterpiece. More
