Is Chris Pine The Next Jack Ryan? No title yet, but maybe a star Source: Variety
The long gestating Tom Clancy / Jack Ryan reboot is edging closer to fruition, with the news this morning from Variety that Chris Pine is in talks to play the lead.
Which confirms that Paramount are going "young" with the franchise, and puts the kibosh on the rather exciting recent rumours that George Clooney was interested in the Ryan role.
No title yet, so we don't know which of Clancy's remaining eight unfilmed Ryanverse stories we can expect. There are two books left, prior to Ryan holding any sort of rank that would look ludicrous on Pine: Red Rabbit, about a plot to kill the Pope; and The Cardinal of the Kremlin, where Ryan is still a CIA analyst working his way up the ranks (weirdly, the original James T Kirk William Shatner was at one time in talks to appear in a Harrison Ford-starring Cardinal movie).
Not that those sorts of considerations affected The Sum of All Fears, which in the book series happens after Clear and Present Danger, but as a film became a Ryan's-first-mission prequel. So whichever of Clancy's novels is next up for adaptation, we can almost certainly expect some serious re-jigging. And those politics will need some updating too.
I think rebooting (I hate that word) and starting from the beginning is an awful choice. Ryan needs to be older for any of the remaining Clancy novels to work. Hell, just for a film like this to feel authentic period. And also, as was mentioned in another thread, we've already seen this movie before. Why do the same thing just a few years later?
They really should be casting someone who fits the part. That doesn mean he needs to be 60 or something. Just that he comes off as credible.... Read More
Obviously Pine is younger than Ryan is in the books, actually Ryan would be approaching 60 now, if I remember correctly. But of course the people aiming to relaunch the franchise are looking for somebody younger, which may or may not be a good choice. But within those parameters, I think Pine is a good fit. ... But Kazuya, playing a man of distinction will be. Jack Ryan needs to be respected and in his line of work that only comes with experience. The only Ryan that Pine could credibly play would be him in his early years. But that wouldn't make for much of a Clancy based film now would it?
Adapting one of Clancy's books to fit Pine makes no sense at all. And its just not going to feel authentic. Why not just find an actor that fits the character? There are certainly plenty to choose fro... Read More

I'm still wanting to see good old Harrison back doing a decent thriller or something.
I know, no one seems to like him anymoree]
Not on here, anyway. I love Harrison Ford, my favorite actor.
Anyway, as for Pine as Jack Ryan, I think it's a good fit. He already said that one of the characters he based his Kirk on was Han Solo, so hitting the Ford take on the character and adding his own should be no problem. ... Read More
I don't think Chris Pine is manly enough for Jack Ryan, Harrison Ford yes, Alec Baldwin yes, Ben Affleck yes, new Captain Kirk? no. I would pick Josh Lucas or for interesting twist Edward Norton even though he's the Hulk now. ... Read More

I know, I know, no one seems to like him anymore but I'm 40 this month and when ya get older ya just want something safe and maybe a bit dog eared to confirm that things are still kind of like they used to be.
Movies are getting bland of late. Endless remakes/reimaginings/prequels/origin stories etc.
Where are the real BLOKES who used to star in movies?
Where are the original stories?

Are you fucking kidding me? This is laughable. Why must everything be set up as a money making franchise these days? There is no way this is going to be an intelligent film. Its now gonna be dumbed down and injected with a bunch of gratutous action scenes.
And its a real downer cause I actually had hopes of seeing another proper Clancy based film. Why can't we have a real man as Jack Ryan? Not some twentysomething pretty boy. Do we really need "Jack Ryan Begins"? I sure as hell don... Read More
