Exclusive: The Wire: Truth Be Told

Exclusive: The Wire: Truth Be Told

David Simon made five seasons of universally acclaimed TV show The Wire, and now he's written the introduction to Rafael Alvarez's The Wire: Truth Be Told to give the full story behind the show. But it gets better: we have an exclusive audio clip of Simon himself reading his introduction to the book, explaining what it's all about. Listen for yourself below.

For the three of you who haven't yet joined the Wire groupies, it's a minutely detailed, impressively acted and brilliantly structured look at the war on drugs in Baltimore, Maryland, seen through the eyes of cops (using wire-taps, hence the name), dealers and those caught inbetween. Each season takes a different focus, but the overall structure and many of the characters remain the same over the show's entire run.

The Wire: Truth Be Told is out now from Canongate, priced at £20, and the whole series is also out on DVD, so if you want more go investigate! We doubt you'll need any actual phone taps though.

Classic stuff
There's already a book called Homicide: a year on the killing streets, by the writers which is quite similar in setting and tone and based upon real life experiences.A gripping read. The Wire is an enduring and richly detailed masterpiece, though pretty much everyone knows that by now, not least thanks to its recent run on BBC. I'm actually glad you brought up The Shield captainrentboy, because that's also one of the greatest programmes ever to hit the small screen, the corruption and gritty stor... Read More

Awesome series
I watched all five seasons, for the first time, over a period of about 5 weeks earlier this year, and it's very very good. BUT, and I know I should be ashamed, I watched all 7 seasons of The Shield about two weeks after the Wire marathon and I actually got far more enjoyment out of that show :/ I know, I know The Shield is basically the Wire for people with ADD, but I couldn't help it. Coincidentaly I started on Simon's mini series Generation Kill last night, onlty watched one ep so far but it ... Read More
