Cronenberg To Remake The Fly. Again!
Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Cronenberg To Remake The Fly. Again!

Rob Zombie said that he only agreed to remake Halloween because he couldn't bear to think of it being done by anyone else. That's the only possible reason we can think of to explain the news from The Hollywood Reporter that David Cronenberg is set to direct and probably write a new version of The Fly.

It must be a ways off, since Cronenberg is currently working on Don Delillo's Cosmopolis and the Robert Ludlum thriller The Matarese Circle. But THR is very clear that the film is in development at Fox, and suggests the evolution in special effects over the last 20 years as the possible reason.

The leap from the Vincent Price original to Cronenberg's version was, obviously, quantum. We went from man-with-a-fly's-head-on (not to mention fly-with-a-man's-head-on - "help meeee!") to Brundlefly in a similar span of time that separates Cronenberg's remake and today. But can another new version really be that different again? And can anyone replace Jeff Goldblum in that role?

The Fly obviously remains a project close to Cronenberg's heart: he's already been involved in turning it into an opera. Maybe the wounds from Chris Walas' The Fly II are still raw, and Cronenberg is damned if he'll let that happen again. Whatever, we'll watch this story with some interest.

There no reason at all to do a remake of THE FLY, there's nothing wrong with it. Rather, he should unmake those mainstream flicks he's been directing lately. ... Read More

RE: Cronenberg To Remake The Fly. Again!
Probably have him actually fly this time.  How about we forget about the human becomes giant fly monster aspect and go with the much less explored Human becomes tiny fly monster version? ... Read More

RE: Cronenberg To Remake The Fly. Again!
L: Kazuya L: Workshed What's the point?? His remake of The Fly is a masterpiece. Let him remake something else. There doesn't seem to be any point, unless Cronenberg has something extraordinary planned. It's hard to say, but I definitely agree that the first remake is sublime. And as others have mentioned there are other flicks in his catalogue he could start in on instead. He could remake Scanners, for instance. sp; It might be madnes, but I wish he could do another film b... Read More

RE: Cronenberg To Remake The Fly. Again!
I don't see how he can ever top his first remake, the flick is a masterfully rendered tragedy with a sensationally good performance by Goldblum. That's not to say I'm completely disinterested though, it is Cronenberg.. ... Read More

Eh? Why remake?
David Cronenberg is on a roll with History Of Violence & Eastern Promises. Two of my favourite films of the decade. Why go back and try and improve on classic old magic? Like anyone is going to improve on Goldblum's performance. The puppetry / animatronics effects of the 80's wipe the floor anyway compared to the modern day CG bunkum we get now. I hope this alleged claim of a remake does not happen. ... Read More
