Fox Plans Fantastic Four Reboot And Akiva Goldsman's involved... Source: Variety
The news of Disney's $4bn acquisition of Marvel is still ringing in our ears, but Variety has a reminder that it will be some time indeed before Marvel's entire canon resides permanently at the House of Mouse. Fox control the rights to the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil and Silver Surfer for as long as they continue to knock out films (so does that mean they're in danger of losing Daredevil?). And they've just announced a reboot for the FF.
The primary-coloured, kid-friendly FF films are easily the series that, more than any other of the current slew of comicbook properties, most faithfully reflects its 60s origins. The 2005 original garnered shaky reviews but mega box-office. 2007's follow-up, Rise of the Silver Surfer, did similar business, and gained the consensus that it was one of those sequels that's actually better than the original.
So the series would seem to have been moving in the right direction, with the stable cast of Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis, and direcor Tim Story. But whether any of that gang will return for part 3 is unclear.
Akiva Goldsman, whose CV as a producer includes I Am Legend, Hancock and Mr & Mrs Smith, and who wrote screenplays for I, Robot, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin (nurse!), has been hired to oversee the reboot. Script duties are currently with Michael Green: a Heroes alumnus who's been working on Green Lantern.
Fox have plans for a solo outing for The Silver Surfer, so it's unlikely that he'll show up this time out. Dr Doom is currently at the bottom of Shanghai Harbour and was unavailable for comment.
I think they will since its always great getting back with old cast mates in a sequal. also I beleive the villian will be Galatis and well see the silver Surfer return to help as well as the Watch, and with galatis back, it could turn on doom at the end of the film, and also create that female fire hero character. I also think they'll make the Hulk vs the Think after that, and have Doom control Hulk, while his cousin becomes She-Hulk who joins the FF and becomes The Things new girlfreind. I Hope... Read More
A half decent script would be a good start.....and a director with more of a visual flair. The Fantastic Four are certainly cheesy - but dull they most certainly are not!!! At least the comics weren't. ... Read More
I thought it was nice to have a super hero movie that wasn't all angsty and dark, something that kids could enjoy. On the other hand, I think Fox should do the decent thing and let the rights expire so it can all be part of the uber-film universe that Marvel is building up to with Avengers. Or maybe someone should just come up with something new... a man made of blutack, perhaps. ... Read More
Well I think it deserves another outing, just take it in a different direction, get a better script, don't show all the major set pieces in the trailer a la RotSS which is what disappointed me about the 2nd one just felt I was watching a series of exposition inbetween major action pieces I'd already seen. I really like Evans as Human Torch. ... Read More
Don't reboot, just take it in a new direction, I really enjoyed the first two, apart from the Galactus cloud thing, I thought it was true to the FF nature, even the nostalgia of the old cartoons I use to watch as a kid came rushing back. ... Read More
The second one cost more, but made less money than the first. Also, Galactus was a cloud, for god's sake. They're not wasting time though, are they? ... Read More
I hope this isn't going to be another of those reboots where they change the entire cast as i thought everybody was good at their parts in the first two, so don't change anything casting-wise ( especially Jessica Alba, we can't do without her ). I know these movies took a lot of criticism but i thought they both nailed the comics spot on. A lot of people seemed to be criticising it for not being dark and gritty like the last few Batman movies but let's face it, FF was never a dark, gritty comi... Read More
As Silver Surfer is the reason for the second FF success, then surely a stand alone Surfer franchise is the wise move!!
