Avatar Teaser Trailer Hits
At last, at last, it's here.

20 August 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

submit to reddit

It's been a long time coming, but the first trailer for James Cameron's Avatar is here and it's a thing of beauty.

In a near-wordless trailer, we see crippled ex-Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) meet his blue, half-Na'vi "avatar" and then get his consciousness stuffed into the alien body. Thence he transfers down to the beautifully constructed planet of Pandora, where, it's fair to say, all hell soon breaks loose.

The film's now out until December 18, which by our count is not nearly soon enough.

Head on over to Apple Trailers to watch it in hi-definition. Watched it? Have a click-through our step-by-step teaser trailer breakdown.

Unimpressed
I just had to say that regardless how the film itself turns out, this trailer is about as exciting as a new pair of pants. Sorry, but come on! 10 years in development, blah, blah....seen it all before! So much work is needed not just on the CGI but the overall look of the film! I am sorely disappointed. No matter how hyped, how much money is spent or how revolutionary the 3-D (supposedly) is, you absolutely cannot fail to astound. And, frankly, Cameron has failed completely. I am more excited ab More

AS IMPRESSIVE AS IT IS........
It looks like like a cartoon. I guess the technology just isn't there yet. However, I'm sure in 3D it will be amazing, but I'm not seeing anything in this trailer that was any more mind blowing than the first teaser for The Phantom Menace ten years ago, remember how utterly jaw dropping that was first time you saw it? Very underwhelming...
I'm hoping this is just the result of me seeing this on my laptop rather than the big screen, but what a disappointment. Considering the hype, and with Avatar supposed to be a groundbreaking work of visual effects, as people have said, there is nothing new on show here whatsoever. It looks very much like a computer game to me, and that's not what I go to the movies for. I think I'll wait for the critic reviews in December before I decide to shell out my hard earned cash. Please Jim Cameron, p More

I'm surprised after all the hype they would release a trailer that looks this bad. Most of the rendering is OK but it's the physics that looks all wrong, the way things move. As other folk have said, it looks like a trailer for a video game. If it's because they haven't finished doing all the polishing then they should have waited. IF this is the final thing, then could this turn out to be Camerons first turkey? More

Underwhelming
Sure this film looks pretty, lots of action and an interesting concept. It's not a trailer for a bad film at all. However, considering how much the effects of this film and how 'groundbreaking' it was all supposed to be, the trailer is something of a let-down. It doesn't look any different to some of the more advanced technology we've seen already. Are the Na'vi effects better than Gollum, for example? I can't say that they look much different. Let's not be unnecessarily cruel.  But I think everyone would find it yif this was wank.  You know, the massive creative ego of Cameron who imposed a self-exile on himself that no one wanted, cosseted himself away for the self-import of this film, prouder than punch with the technology he was to give to the world and accordant liberation he was to donate to other film makers...and all I can think of is pretty sure I went to school with that guy[/i] More

RE: Everybody's a critic!
The fact is if this doesn't represent the film he should not have released it. Speilberg, when he genuinely changed the game with Jurassic Park, had the courage to release barely a shot of CGI footage in advance - and we all remember the feeling we had when we finally saw it. He had something special, and didn't need to lower people's expectations in advance. Still, he knew the limits of CGI... which seem to be the same today as they were then. More

Alot of the comments here are way off the mark & seem to be negative for the sake of it. Remember this is esentially without sound & 3D. What we see in the cinema will be much more expansive. The footage looks incredible to me, there will be a great stoy here & to compare this to a present day Lucas flop is unfair. Look at the navi in the "waking up" scene, movement is so relaistic. It just looks like an average big budget sci-fi flick, and a slightly dull one at that. btw not to be pedantic but since when is CG animation not used as a visual 'effect'? Digital or analogue - It doesn't matter, essentially they are 'effects,' plain and simple. Cameron is as subtle as a brick with film language. It appears too OTT in my opinion, I can't engage with something that is constantly referring to it's own 'spetacularness'. I expected the effects to look better than that, but I bet that they'll look awesome in the final film. I don't think that the CGI is entirely finished and they have still four months of post production left. Gollum was a living and breathing character and King Kong looked great too, i don't think that WETA is going to screw up these characters either. More

RE: these are NOT effects
Must admit, I'm also a tad underwhelmed by this- still, as has already been mentioned, there are still a few months of effects tweaking left. I'm surprised though as I would have thought a perfectionist like Cameron would have waited until it was 100% there before releasing so many clear images - was expecting just a few quick glimpses of the Na'vi. Will wait and see what December brings - one thing's for sure, this certainly won't be enough to convince the missus that it's a must-see More

Subsurface scattering
I'n seriously missing the subsurface scattering effects. That's what they've been using for the past 6 years to give skins a realistic lighting effect in games and movie. Everything looks too plastic now. Would be weird if James Cameron was using dated special effects... More

hmmmm!
It looks alright doesn't it with regards to the effects, design etc But in terms of a first trailer I was quite let down. Not a single rush of excitement or goose bump, was it the score? Or the editing? Who knows? Bring on December! More

these are NOT effects
come on people, these are NOT visual effects. This is CG animation. The animation looks stunning, no doubt about that. the 3D will be awesome. But this does NOT look like the movie we have been promised. Besides, Halo anyone? More

Underwhelmed - Overused
Everybody seems to feel that way? Surely there's variations on this feeling? Anyway, i don't know what peoples problems are. What are they expecting please?! This is a 2 minute (or so) sneak peak of a film that's going to be 3 hours long! Have a little faith people. After all we're watching this on laptops/computers/etc. On the big screen, i bet some of these visuals are awe inspiring! Anyway, i was impressed and my intrigue have raised ever more so. More

Waiting
I'm going to wait until I see this on the big screen before I pass judgement but I think as a tease the trailer works rather well. I think it's important to consider that, in watching a trailer on your computer monitor, you're seeing out of context footage in way that it was not designed to be seen. Roll on tomorrow when I can see more footage in Edinburgh :-) More

RE: Avatar Trailer Hits
I think it looks fantastic. I have just watched it bit by bit and the effects are outstanding. Case in point, take a closer look at the scene where the female Na'vi is crying over a body. The face is REAL! I still have really high hopes for this. Looks bloody exciting. I can not wait to be transported to this completely immersive 'other world'. I think you people are forgetting the whole point of cinema: ESCAPISM! This seems to be taking you about as far away as you can a More

Looks Good!
Yet to see a film that has been as colourful and as vibrant in its appearance all the while not feel like a kids movie. However there were a few design elements of the human vehicles and the overall look that reminded me a lot of the Halo Universe. Not trying to stir, seriously it looks good and I can't wait for December 18th! More

Cool Cucumbers!!
It looks pretty cool, but not as cool as T-2 and not as cool as Aliens!! I'll wait until tomorrow and judge via the 3-D elements. To be completely truthful, there's only one movie that I'm geeking out over, at the moment. And that movie is called 'The Expendables' More

RE: Avatar Trailer Hits
Oh.  Dear.  Lord. After 12 years waiting for Cameron to get back to doing what he has always done best, I was really hoping this trailer would excite me.  All this trailer has convinced me of is that 3D is a gimmick that will be used to make the mediocre look amazing. I wanted to be blown away, to have that... aching feeling in the pit of my stomach that 18th December couldn't come around fast enough.  All I've got is two minutes I could have spent doing something More

I still think it looks great
But - and I hate to judge things by trailer content - it isn't photo-realistic. It looks like mo-cap. Gollum was far, far better, at least in terms of looking "lifelike". Again, I state, I don't want to really judge it by a few snippets in a teaser trailer, and I think the film itself (rather than the special effects) looks like a cracker, but I don't see - yet - why it's the great leap forward that was predicted. Why are people already having a pop at the visual effects? This is a trailer for a film out in December, trailer vfx are notorious for looking less polished than the final article, you only have to look at King Kong to see this. In reality, during the next 3 months, spit and polish (not to mention final colour grading) applied to probably all the shots in this trailer. More

also has anyone else noticed that on the apple trailers page, the blurb states, 'from the director of the "Titanic"'? - for a film that has cost more than the annual expenditure of your average small country, you'd have thought they could have got the name of the director's previous film right, or at least have made the blurb grammatically correct... I think we should wait to see it in 3D
That seems to be where Cameron is making his "future of cinema" claims with all his fancy new cameras and such. C'mon chaps, the CGI is great in the trailer - it seems much more integrated with the live action than the Star Wars prequels. Not too sure what people were expecting from this? I have faith. More

Ava...fantastic
Off course we're missing out on the whole 3D-ness of it all but what the trailer show in it's 2D guise promises a lot. Although I have to say I have no idea what the story is apart from: soldiers go to an alien planet and walk around as big blue people, one falls for a native girl....that's it. So I guess I'll look forward to experience but not the paper-thin plot. More
