Avatar Teaser Trailer Hits
At last, at last, it's here.

20 August 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

submit to reddit

It's been a long time coming, but the first trailer for James Cameron's Avatar is here and it's a thing of beauty.

In a near-wordless trailer, we see crippled ex-Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) meet his blue, half-Na'vi "avatar" and then get his consciousness stuffed into the alien body. Thence he transfers down to the beautifully constructed planet of Pandora, where, it's fair to say, all hell soon breaks loose.

The film's now out until December 18, which by our count is not nearly soon enough.

Head on over to Apple Trailers to watch it in hi-definition. Watched it? Have a click-through our step-by-step teaser trailer breakdown.

Oh Ye of Little Faith!
I must say that I find people's lack of faith disturbing. This is the director who brought us Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens and The Abyss. I think it's safe to say that Cameron has displayed the necessary skill and aptitude required for making a modern sci-fi film. It's also his first feature-length project in ten years so I'm sure his latest attempt hasn't been half-hearted. I'm not saying that the trailer was a little underwhelming. I was also disappointed by the over-abundance of CGI that More

I've seen 5 mins of footage at the Empire Movie con. To be honest I wasn't convinced. The 3D is extremely hard on the eyes, especially on the fast moving action sequences. I actually felt my eyes becoming stained, unable to focus. Saying that will still go see the full feature- obviously. I do think the studio are setting themselves up for a bit of a fall, by raising expections to almost unattainable levels. In my opinion the 3D of Tron looked far more effective. I guess time will tell if t More

All the people slagging it off will eat their words when they see it in 3-D - i've seen a some footage and it is absolutely stunning. there is so much depth that you'll be able to watch it over and over again and see something new. Whether the story + script hold up is another matter! More

Look . . . The trailer does not have the affects we were promised. But it still does look like a major film. We're all still going to see it! And when we do it'll be in 3D. People are so dumb sometimes ...
... because that's clearly the best use of CG I've ever seen. You're forgetting that Starship Troopers was shot in the desert and the creatures were added in later. A lot of the shots in this trailer are entirely CG because they had to create a whole world! Look at the detail! It's bursting with activity. More

When James Cameron announced, years ago, that his next film was going to be a sci-fi love story between 10-foot tall blue aliens, I thought he was kidding. I was really surprised by the trailer. The first couple of shots are absolutely wonderful, and then Jake comes out of the airplane in his wheelchair and everything looks out of focus, like a video game. Then there's an awkward montage of iffy effects and blurry backgrounds, concluded by an odd shot of two blue creatures, well, kissing. More

After seeing T2 and Aliens, I believed Cameron when he claimed that Avatar is worth waiting for and will change the game etc., but I'm afraid this is not the case. I was honestly expecting to see the trailer and try to figure out which were the live actors and which the CG ones. Well I saw it in 3D this evening and it did look MUCH better than in the trailer, but it still looked like the MOST EXPENSIVE CARTOON EVER. You know what I think the problem is? Its not the effects, it is the "fake" way that the camera moves that sells the effects short. It has that gloss you have come to expect from these sort of films, but I think the language of effects has started to shift. Restraint seems to be becoming more common place. More

RE: not surprised
True, it does look like a videogame – or a european sci-fi comic. I doubt 3D will save it, but I'm going to give it a chance, since I've been missing Cameron in the cinemas... More

not surprised
not surprised this movie was always gonna be a vanity project. How else could the king of the world follow up the worlds biggest film? Shame, but absolute power etc...im not interested in technology if it surplants story and spectacle. This trailer betrays Cameron; he used to be a master of combining great 'necessary' effects and amazing story telling, im afraid this just looks like a cynical attempt to make gamers buy into the world that they already occupy. Wheres the grit? wheres the tension? More

It will have it's qualities
And we are overlooking the fact also that it has to be in 3-D to be fully appreciated. We can only offer our verdicts when the film is released. More

It has it's qualities
The mood is terse, broody and very surreal, with the music and the fact that the trailer is almost wordless greatly contribute to this. It is almost like a kind of 'The Shining' meets '2001'/ But it's let down by the special effects. I have no doubt, however, that the same man who brought us 'The Terminator' and 'Aliens' couldn;t surely let us down. Could he? More

I don't get some of you people
Ok had a quick browse of the comments on this trailer and all I can say is WOW you lot need to get out more and take films less seriously. People saying the physics look wrong - jeez it's a sci-fi/fantasy movie set on another world, you don't know what the laws of physics are on that world at all do you....or are you telling us you have been there. People also saying it's a star wars prequel rip-off really how is that? I don't see any lightsabers, I see a forest, maybe that's your tiny little l More

Somewhat disappointed....
I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed. I agree with some of the comments about the physics looking wrong. The characters float like on a video game, and the detail in the environments lacks the realism that we expected to see. Having said that, I have faith that the 3D IMAX experience will be second to none, and that the characters will be real life as always with a James Cameron movie. This film was never meant to watched on a 15" LCD screen, which begs the question - why?!? More

RE: 3D people, 3D!!!!
I appreciate comments from people screaming that the Na'vi look 'real' (they don't, but that's beside the point) but for me, the problem came within the first few seconds of the trailer - when Sam Worthington's character wheels out of the back of the ship with the face mask on... it looks like a computer game! Fair enough not making the big gangly blue creatures look 'real', but at least try to make the Humans look it! There's guys wandering round in the background of that scene who wouldn't be More

Apprehensive
I remain eager to see the film and even if the film was not 3D and remained a 'normal' 2D experience I would still be excited as you have to put a lot of faith in James Cameron. I do agree with the comments about the CG not looking great. It looks good but I can't help but feel that when you see the Na'vi running with the fire lighting half the face it looks unfinished. Even the worry lines on Sam Worthington's Na'vi above look stuck on. I also though James Cameron was into 3D for real life. Tha More

I know in general I am not a fan of Cameron but whilst I tried to watch the trailer with an open mind; I cannot believe how under whealming that trailer is. I know its meant to be in 3D but is that CGI finished? Oh no, another sci-fi romance.
Another love story of TITANIC proportions. This is gonna suck. 3D it may be, but if your gonna poke a stick in my face I want it to be worth it, this looks like a rehash of all the action/sci-fi films of recent years, even down to the bluish tint on the film. This will probably appeal to Marvel/Image/Dark Horse/IDW comic readers who seem to get excited by anything that leads to the use of all of the above and the inclusion of pseudo-religeous imagery, the exact things that piss me off in the More

RE: Camerons been here before.
Wait, I wasn't expecting much of this but..that was disappointing even at low standards. Creatures that look to come out of Star Wars with a bastardation with Final Fantasy, it all seems done before (Star Wars),plot could be good, but it looks (stylistically) like a some children cartoon fantasy (actually Samuria Jack looked fantastic) and looks a bit ridiculous on realistic like CGI, the Na'Vi look poor, I have this sense it will be very silly, and wait, when did this become a CGI movie? Camerons been here before.
I remember all the negativity that surrounded Titanic. Press reporting that there was trouble on the set on a daily basis, budgets going through the roof, Cameron arguing with studio heads etc. Even the trailer when it was released, looked very boring. Especially with a storyline that held no surprises, Funnily that film went on to be the biggest grossing film ever, 11 oscars in the bag and a big FU from the director to the studios and the fanboys. He's also spent many years developing w More

Why all the whining?
I'm surprised so many people have such a strong negative reaction to this. I think people just want to hate it because of the hype. It has been over hyped but I think some of the point of the hype has been lost along the way. Most of the talk from the people involved in the film seemed to focus on the level of detail in the CGI and the realism of the motion capture rather then the 3D aspect (although I think that is still going to be really impressive) and from this evidence I think it does More

I never really got into the whole Avatar hype. However having just watched the trailer to me it looks Brilliant. The graphics look great and unless you are playign some new game on a super computer I think the graphics look beyond belief. I would be very interested to see the final film, however most likely wouldn't go to the movies as I never do. However that said I do hope that the story is a good one. nothing worst than a collection of great graphics and action scenes with no real stor More

RE: Lesson
L: MoBiUGeArSkIn I don't honestly see how anyone can say it looks at all bad. It LOOKS incredible! Some of the best CGI to ever grace the medium. These blue alien things look 100% believable when glimpsed in real world locations here, and 100% believable in the fabricated environment, which itself looks utterly tangible and full of life. EDIT - And to all the people saying "it looks like a videogame"... do you fools even play videogames? I do. I play loads. And if videog More
