Sam Raimi Enters World Of Warcraft
Director LFM for big screen adaptation

Here's one to file under, "Wait, whaaaa?". Sam Raimi has signed on to direct Warcraft, a film version of the long-running game series, including insanely popular massively-multiplayer-online-role-playing-game World of Warcraft.

The plan is for Raimi to oversee the development of this film while he works on Spider-Man 4, which is due to shoot next year, and then knock it off his To Do list straight after that.

For many World of Warcraft is synonymous with the kind of social dysfunction that leads grown men to spend hundreds of hours in the virtual world of Azeroth instead of eating, sleeping, going to work, looking after their kids or paying attention to basic bodily hygiene. However, with over 12 million subscribers, we've got to admit there must be something to it.

There's no word yet on what sort of quests or characters will be included, but with four games and countless novels, comics and other spin-offs to pilfer, the Warcraft universe certainly isn't short of lore or stories to explore on screen. Empire expects we'll be in store for an epic tale of conquest, heroism and endless whining about the amount of spam in Barrens chat.

The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is overseeing the project, with games creator Blizzard Entertainment, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Filming will begin as soon as Raimi finishes grinding exalted rep with the Wyrmrest Accord.

RE: Hilarious!
The Warcraft universe is so heavy inspired by the world of Tolkien, so imo the biggest problem is making it original. Staying true to the lore the fans will be happy, but to the rest of the world it will be a LOTR clone. Heck... It might be a LOTR clone in the eyes of the WOWfans as well. This is not an easy task. For the Aliance. More

Hilarious!
All i can do is laugh! This is the director who managed to fuck up one of the best loved comic characters of all time by paying no attention to original source material and now they want to give him WoW? this is gonna be funny. I cant wait to see what 12 million angry WoW fans do if he fucks this up aswell More

I agree with Bluehawk. I think they should do a trilogy based on the story of Arthas (WC III Reign of Chaos, Frozen Throne and a third chapter). In my opinion, that is by far the best lore in the Warcraft universe. If done well, it could be what the Star Wars Prequels should have been. More

WoW movie?
Is this movie definitely based on WoW? or could it be based on one of the RTS games or one of the novels? Everyone reports it as the WoW movie but have they decided that yet? Its just tiled 'Warcraft' so why are all the headlines 'Raimi signs for WoW movie'? More

They won't get a cent from the built-in fan base,
because they'll be too busy playing warcraft at home and will probably end up illegaly downloading it so they don't have to stand up. More

12 million...
but 2 million selling gold. Sure this will be commercially successful, but I have very little hope for it being an actual decent film. This film already feels like it going to be like a 'Rogue', seems cool but will just sap us on the heads leaving us sore and unamused More

Well I'll be...
Interesting news indeed. This has raised my expectations from "This will definitely suck" to "There is a slight chance that this might not be total crap". I am cautiously optimistic. Also, for the Horde! More

well since we won't see his 'Hobbit,' i'm really glad Raimi is doing some fantasy, and this one should be chock full of battle scenes. nice. More

Hmm
This could be interesting... Will they side with the Alliance (BOOO!!) or Horde (WOOO!!!) as neither are technically the bad guys. To Tyreal, I know what you mean, LEEEEEEROY!!!! More

12 Million Subscribers
That's a lot of fans. I doubt that a single film can satisfy all of their expectations. It will be interesting to see what sort of reception it gets when it comes out. More

WOW
Well this could be good if Raimi's involved, though personally Felicia Day of Buffy fame and the online series the GUild should be in it , which also leads me to Empire's sweeping generalisation that WOW and Warcraft are played solely by grown men , we girls play it too :(, More

Arthas
The defintely must do the storyline of Prince Arthas. The human paladin, heir to the throne of lordaeron, who was lured into becoming an evil undead death knight thinking he could save mankind by taking a (cursed) sword. He then became general for the spirit of the darklord The Lich King (The Sauron of the Warcraft universe, who in older times was an orc shaman, destroyed and used as a pawn by demons and now resting in a frozen shard), and conquered the world. Warcraft
To be fair there were Warcraft games prior to World of Warcraft (three in fact) and they all had quite strong stories. My issue is how can you make this film different to Lord of the Rings and all the while make it good? Well if anyone can do it Raimi probably can. More
