Ryan Reynolds Is The Green Lantern
Beats Timberlake and Cooper to the role

11 July 2009  |  Written by Chris Hewitt  |  Source: Variety

submit to reddit

We told you yesterday about the titanic three-way battle between Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and, erm, Justin Timberlake to play the lead role in Warner Bros.’ big-screen adaptation of DC’s Green Lantern.

And now, at long last, the decision has been made. And it’s… drum roll…

Ah, there’s no point trying to build up suspense. We give it away in the bloody headline: yes, it’s Ryan Reynolds, the only actor of the three who, says Variety, had his holding option extended for the week.

Of the three actors vying for the role, Reynolds was our first choice to play the headstrong, cocky Hal Jordan, a hotshot pilot who becomes entrusted with an all-powerful ring and membership of a galactic corps of green-clad cops whose job it is to keep the peace in the universe.

After all, Reynolds can do headstrong and cocky in his sleep; he’s a fine actor, with comic timing gifted to him by the Gods themselves; he’s six-packed up to the max; he’s handsome as hell (oh God, we’re man-crushing), and currently riding high after a great summer. Not only did he manage to steal X-Men Origins: Wolverine from under Hugh Jackman’s muttonchops, despite barely having more screentime than Man On Train #3, but his rom-com, The Proposal, grossed over $100 million.

Of course, this raises more questions than it answers: what will become of Reynolds’ commitment to the Deadpool spin-off? Deadpool is his favourite character, and it’s hard to imagine Reynolds walking away from a chance to get the Merc With A Mouth right, after Wolverine’s shabby mistreatment of the character. And Harrison Ford and Christian Bale are just two actors who have shown that it’s possible to balance two franchises at a time.

And will Reynolds be involved in any Justice League movie, should it ever get off the ground? How many movies has he signed up for? Variety isn’t saying.

We’re also guessing that this rules out Reynolds from any involvement with The Flash, a role to which he was long linked.

Shooting on Green Lantern is scheduled to begin in January in Sydney, with Martin Campbell at the helm. Warners is still working out a budget, but we’d be flabbergasted if the film got shut down now.

actually read the Nightstalkers comic?? Hannibal King wasn't a stand up-the 3 charcters were very,VERY darkgain that was due to the script and a decision by the director. Anyway Green Lantern was always for me my second DC fave after Batman and Martin Campbell can do no wrong in my book. Reynolds does not feature in my book of Bad Actors, but he does appear in my much smaller book of Actors Who’ve Played Characters With Atypical Names. Ryan’s entry in this book includes such gems as Jay ‘Boom’ DeBoom, Bobby Rupp, Paul Nodel, Henry Lipschitz, Captain Excellent, and Kevin. Could it be that Ryan’s choice of characters is based on the fact that his middle name is Rodney? Ryan, I know you’re reading this, let us know. More

Deadpool and The Green Lantern??
I am sure the $100 million that The Proposal has just done at the US Box Office had something to do with it.  That was probably the clincher.  I am sure its likely that Reynolds will do both.  That is unless he is beholden to a contract with one studio or another.  There is simply to much clamour for a Deadpool movie with him after the Wolverine pic, for him to not be signed up.  I'd love to see it so much, I'm actually posting about it!   So, is Green Lantern More

I like Reynolds and find him a pleasant and charismatic actor. However, I tend to think this may be a miscast role. He may well surprise but the role will require drama and the character has never been particularly suited to humour which seems to be Reynolds stock and trade. More

RE: Deadpool and The Green Lantern??
I have to say I'm sad that it means that Reynolds now almost certainly won't be The Flash but actually it's probably a savvy career choice. Green Lantern is fun but a lot more straight laced than a Flash movie no doubt would have been. Probably playing Flash would have irreversibly type cast Reynolds as the fast talking sarcastic guy. This film serves a chance for him to break that well. I'm ecstatic that it isn't Timberlake. More

I'm delighted this film is getting off the ground. Green Lantern's my favouarte DC super and not well known outside the comics world when ya think about it (kinda DC's Ironman). Geoff Johns has made Green Lantern a hot property again so hopefully the film will take inspiration from his work. This film could set itself apart from the slew of other superhero movies as its essentially a space opera instead of the standard superhero fare. Reynolds is a fine choice and this role should fit him like a glove... or a green power ring.
