New Alice In Wonderland Concept Art
Tim Burton's stunning vision revealed

22 June 2009  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: USA Today

USA Today has published some gorgeous new images from Tim Burton's new Alice in Wonderland project, underway at Disney.

Available for your hi-def perusal is concept art showing Johnny Depp as a wall-eyed Mad Hatter; Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway as the Red and White Queens; and glimpses of The White Rabbit, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and Alice herself.

That character list should give you a clue that this is not quite a straight adaptation. While the Hatter and the Rabbit are from Lewis Carrol's barking 1865 original story, The Tweedles and the Queens are all from 1871 sequel Through the Looking Glass (the Queen in the first book is the playing card Queen of Hearts, not the chess piece Red Queen, although reports that Bonham Carter's version is fond of crying "off with their heads" and has a moat full of bobbing skulls, suggests an amalgamation of the two).

The tweaked story takes pace ten years after Alice's first visit to Wonderland, of which she has no recollection. Fleeing from a society party, she stumbles back down the rabbit hole and is co-opted by the creatures into a revolt against the crimson monarch.

Forty days of shooting was actually completed last December, with the intervening time devoted to animation, FX, and 3D-isation. Alice is played by Australian newbie Mia Wasikowska. Also on hand - in some form or other - are Christopher Lee as the Jabberwock and Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar, Stephen Fry as The Cheshire Cat, and Crispin Glover as The Knave of Hearts.

The release date for Alice In Wonderland is currently next March.

Wes Craven was attached to an adaptation of the American McGee videogame a while ago, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (cor!). Burton's version may be skew-wiff, but it shouldn't be quite as twisted as that...

WOW
This looks amazing. I do agree that his films have gone downhill in recent years but this guy's mind is so complex and disturbing...that's why, even though some films haven't been great, most are, admittedly, fantastic. Even though Charlie And The Chocolate Factory was a bit mainstream, it was still a blockbuster and that's really, all you need. But Alice In Wonderland is such an odd story anyway, it will be transformed by Tim Burton. Aaaah! Why does he ALWAYS put Helena BC and Johnny Depp i More

Looks like Elijah Wood!!
Love Tim Burtons earlier movies, but Sweeney Todd and Charlie's choc factory were utter crap. He should stop putting Johnny Depp and his wife in everything - they've got it made haven't they? Burton was best with Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and Batman Returns. Burtons Batman is the best ever! The latest two Batman movies were like gritty thrillers and bats could have been a crooked cop, they've ruined them, bring back Burton! More

I didnt love Corpse Bride. I only watched it the once ( it's there, in my dvd cabinet.....begging for a 2nd viewing, but I just never fancy it.....)   But I enjoyed the rest.........even Planet of the Apes was watchable ( saying that, though, I tend to watch the extras on the disc more than the film itself. What does that say? I was looking forward to seeing this movie when I just heard that Burton, Depp and Bonham Carter were involved, now looking at this concept art I am incredibly excited, it just looks awesome! So full of vibrant colours and visuals, I thought Johnny Depps Mad Hatter was going to be styled along the lines of his Willy Wonka but I have to say he looks brilliantly mad!!! next march can' come soon enough! An expressionist taking on the Alice and Wonderland story, count me in.............wonder if he'll be the first to actually bother with the more profound themes of the book though........     To be honest, the only one I would see perfect for this is Jodorowsky, but then again no way that would ever happen, and who knows to what levels he might pervewrse the sotry up. I'm desperate to see this and can't wait, but I hate hate hate hate hate 3D. It's just so pointless and adds nothing to the film other than filming stuff that comes out of the screen - they have to purposely add in bits just so that something jumps out - whereas Drag Me To Hell would have been fucking brilliant in 3D. I wish Tim wasn't bothering with 3D, he's so much better than that. More

The plot for this sounds an awful lot like Frank Beddors book 'The Looking Glass Wars'. Princess 'Alyss' gets transported to Victorian England after a revolt by the red queen in Wonderland. She then escapes from a society party and goes back to help a coalition of characters against the tyranical red. I wonder if this adaptation owes anything to Beddors book, and if so, why hasn't anything been said about it? Then if they haven't used Beddors book, there is an incredible similarity. Of course, More

The concept art of this film looks very...... well, very tim burtonesque. But I'm still concerned that this adaptation may have a very dark and sinister tone especially considering it is a children's story. Still, it has a great cast and I'm very looking forward to it. Just one minor query though, it sed in the article that it will be released next march when I was aware this whole time that it wasnt released til next april!!? Charlie and the chocolate factory is an interesting one because there was so much i really liked about it but there were a lot of elements to it that really annoyed me, I was intrigued by Burton/Depp's interpretation of Wonka, as this pale faced, weird edwardian dandy even though it was nothing like the wonka in the book but i wasn't so keen on the deep roy computer generated oompa loompas, and his songs by the end were just annoyingly repetitive. out of the stills, Anne Hathaway More
