Exclusive: Indy 5 Is A Go!
Frank Marshall spills the beans

18 June 2009  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen

submit to reddit

The hat is officially out of the bag. On Monday Shia Labeouf let slip that a follow up to Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was on the cards and now Frank Marshall has pretty much confirmed it, suggesting that Indy V could be approaching the pencil-chewing script development stage.

Although he didn't specify timelines, Marshall told Empire that ideas would be worked on with a view to green-lighting production sooner rather than later. "It's really about the script," says the veteran Indy producer. "Once we see that, we'll see. We're not going to wait another 20 years. We'd all love to make another one. I'm anxious to hear the idea!"

But are Mssrs. Spielberg, Ford and Lucas equally sold on a fifth outing for the whip-cracking archeologist? "Yeah. We had a great time making the last one and, as Harrison said, we need to make this one soon. We're not getting any younger."

With Ford fast approaching his 67th birthday, time is definitely of the essence. Up may have raised the bar for the ageing adventurers, but Indy showed signs of creakiness in The Crystal Skull and it's safe to rule out too many rolling boulder chases or collapsing rope bridges from a further sequel. Hopefully the same goes for the gopher.

One caveat to all this is the lack of a concrete idea. As Marshall told us: "Until there's a script, nothing's definite. I haven't heard the idea." Here's your chance to play George Lucas and post your most mind-bending McGuffins below...

indy 5
Me thinks the premise behind indy 4 was pretty good...look, indy can't stay young forever but the concept of indy adventures can evolve in the same way that bond evolves...as long as they can entertain and they use the iconic williams soundtrack, then let shia grow into the role....for chris' sakes, harison was an unknown until star wars. indiana Jones and the appalling treatment of Frank Darabont
Now David Koepp's drivelsome Crystal Skull script has been filmed so averagely, perhaps the next Indy movie could be a simple remake of 4, using the rejected Darabont script that everyone except George "revenge attack on my phantom childhood" Lucas thought was the best script since Raiders. More

Tagging along
The nature of the McGuffin, in my opinion, is beside the point. It's the involvement of the hero. In any installment after Raiders, Indy got involved only accidentally. In Temple of Doom, he falls from the sky; in the Last Crusade he was looking for his father, not the Grail; and in Kingdom it was another family affair. The Skull itself was a distant second. In other words: he tags along. I'll take any McGuffin, or McMuffin for all I care, as long as it's Indy himself who initiates the adventure More

Indiana Jones and the Mysterious Isle

They find a lost civilisation made up of both Inuit and Russian explorers. The only way off, they discover, is to go further back in time. Indy stays on the island but gives Mutt his fedora as a keepsake. Mutt returns. Many years later, Mutt finds the Cross of Coronado in a cave. Not content with ruining one perfectly good trilogy...And is there ANYONE out there who really thinks the Star Wars prequels are fit to clean the crap of the shoes of the original trilogy) Mr Lucas (and Mr Speilberg - Im suprised at you!) are ruining an absolute ICON of the 80s. FLASHMAN
Give the endless period of chronic mastication, the next caper would surely have to be set in the 60's, and that has to incorporate the Space Race and The Chinese. That said, EVERYBODY wants the return of The Nazis, and I'd like to see an adventure partly-set in Athens, with Indy chasing for the powers of the Greek Gods. Did anybody see those illustrations from the potentially great sequence at the Peruvian graves that was never filmed? Pity. The film needed it. More

indy and the cross of nazareth ...or something like that
The 2 best indfy films are raiders and last crusade because they deal with biblical artefacts / legends so they need to carry on this theme. kingdom was bad because it dealt with aliens which should be left to the x files and the like indy is not sc-fi!!! a possible plot could revolve around some baddies getting hold of a fragment of the true cross from jesus's crucifiction and it having some of his blood on it which could be used to create a new 'son of god' using the DNA (if around then?) Hmmm, not sure?
If they're going to do it please do it without Lucas, the man is a Phantom Menace! I did like some of the ideas used in Indy 4 - Indy's age, the 50's setting, Area 51, the Russians, the b-movie atomic theme, but the film just didn't know when to stop with the ridiculous slapstick and bloody CGI which was obviously Lucas' contribution to the film! Spielberg and Ford need to take more creative control and make it darker and more gounded in reality like the first three movies! More

Indiana Jones and the attack of the unconvicing CGI
I think that they should let George Lucas direct it and finally put the nail in the Indy coffin. The film could be all CGI so there is absolutely no trace of the original trilogy's excitement and originality. Indy 5
I personally think that the idea of using Atlantis would be a great idea.(as used in the gem of game Indiana Jones and fate of Atlantis) Indy could be searching for the 3 keys to the gateway of Atlantis. Atlantis could hold the fountain of eternal life, or even could contain long lost technology from a ancient, far superior race. Or Atlantis could contain a mine that has minerals that could sustain human life on other planets, and within Atlantis there could be a portal to another wor More

Indiana Jones and The Search For a Hit Sequel.
I actually really enjoyed Indy IV and no, it's not a knee jerk reaction to how long it took to make it! I was reared on Indy but regarding the overblown ending to Crystal Skull, I always felt the films worked better when grounded in a "could it be real" situation like "Raiders" or "Last Crusade" with their biblical overtones. I think a plot surrounding the Spear of Destiny is just crying out to be filmed. More

After the dissapointement that was Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, I hope, the next movie will have a scary and fascinating Mc Guffin, a bad guy that really is bad and kills people in horrific over the top ways so you can actually feel tension once this bad guy is chasing after the hero and I really hope there will be less infantile attemps at humor. Indiana Jones and the Heroic Seed
I've got an idea that will have Spielberg and Lucas salivating: Indy gets abducted by aliens and taken to another planet where he has to impregnate an Alieness to spread his heroic seed into this planet of cowards. 9 months later an Indy / Alien is born and it grows into a fearless adventurer that also does a bit of Archaeology on the side. Not because they are any more/less ridiculous than the religious artifacts from the original trilogy but rather that they didn't fit in with the world that had been created. The first 3 films were all about science vs faith, usually ending with Indy changing his opinion or learning to believe. The aliens completely undermined all of that and didn't fit in with the themes that had been raised with the first 3. That's why I believe so many people had a pro More

RE: Crystal Skull easy to improve on
Also it won't hurt getting some more writers turn in a draft, I mean, if  a film, last time out in a fanchise makes 800 million worldwide, wouldn't you wanna get as many writers as you can putting down ideas for a 5th? It's like there brain drained and too proud to look around for talent. Lucus is not the same with age, and Speilberg has done alot of great stuff, maybe it wouldn't hurt to get someone fresh with ideas in, to spark Indy up, wake Harrison up, and do a film to cap the series o More

It'll be about the Bodhi Tree
Indy's going to find the original Bodhi tree, long thought dead, but actually dug up and moved to Nepal before Queen Tissarakka strangled the decoy with thorns. Marion dies (poisoned) during the course of the film, and at the end of the film Indy attains Nirvana and evaporates into a higher plane, as Mutt and a couple of hundred Chinese troops look on in wonder. They're trying to shoehorn Salah back into this one, apparently. More

Crystal Skull easy to improve on
I think the original Indy 4 script many were interested about, maybe they can get ideas from that. I think what we need is less of a reunion feel of Indy 4, where it was a happy family gang half way through, and have a film where Indy is just more physically threatened by wonders. That's what is missing these days, a escapism that is done really fantastic yet kinda real. More

Only if it's a prequel
If Indy V ever gets made (and it should be rather soon if we want Ford in it) it should be a prequel to Crystal Skull. Enough with the family bonds, it was great in Last Crusade and very decent in Skull but twice is enough. More fitting to the saga would be a dark film in the Dark Knight style with our hero in advanced age, more cynic than ever, globetrotting from snowie mountains to deserts and tropical islands still in good shape to kick ass. The scene from Darabond's script with Indy drunk, w More

Why not make Indy 5!!
I liked Crystal Skull, in my opinion it was the 3rd best in the series, and even if many people didn't like it it was still a box office success. So why not make another one!!? I would love to see indy back in action again even if he is knocking on a bit. if people oppose the idea and they don't like the idea of another movie then the answer is simple. DON'T GO AND SEE IT!! Same goes with terminator salvation. Didn't like it? Then don't watch the next the one. More

Not going to see it.
Next to nobody will. Even the deluded few who pretended that Indy 4 was good will have to eat humble pie. Then again, if they could make it dark (like Temple) and actually have Indy searching after something other than F"%^ING ALIENS!!! like, i dunno, Excalibur or Avalon or Atlantis or Bill Gates first dollar, then maybe...maybe...just maybe. But for the love of good, kill off Mutt in the first reel. Yeah baby!!! More

I have to say, I'm yet to work out on what level KotCS was supposed to be enjoyable. Even leaving aside its heritage, I just found it to be a terribly written film with no forward momentum and no points of interest to any of the characters; it's the only Steven Spielberg film I've seen which I would describe as "incompetent", and that's saddening. I guess box office logic suggests that a fifth is a good idea, but I'm very unlikely to be there to see it this time... More

I got the stone dropping in the pit of my stomach feeling when I saw the headline. I enjoyed the previous film but please, I fear another visit will desecrate the memory of the fabled Indy originals. Spielberg and Lucas, those films are as much ours as they are yours, don't play silly buggers with a much loved franchise and focus your talents elsewhere. But if they do make it, I'll be in the queue no doubt! More

RE: Exclusive: Indy 5 Is A Go!

Crystall Skull is a good film. Bring on the next one.
I'm a massive Indiana Jones fan and remember watching the originals with awe when I was a kid at the cinema. I'll admit I was disappointed when I first saw Crystall Skull at the cinema which was due to massive overhype but when I watched it on Blueray later on in the year I was very surprised as to how enjoyable it was. It's no Raiders but I do believe it's up there with the other films. Bring on the next one I say. More

Proof Pudding
Indy IV was absolutely terrible, they knew it when they were making it, we all know it, Empire knows it (hiding behind 4 stars, i thought journalists were supposed to have backbones), everyone knows it. As a sequel it was blasphemous, as a stand alone film it was crap, should name this Indiana Jones and the George/Steven/Harrison Retirement Fund. Blockbuster has died. Long live Wes Anderson. More

So Crystal Skull wasn't as good as Raiders. . .
. . . Neither were the other sequels! But they were all a fun time. Crystal Skull would have been a "so so" movie in my book, except for the presence of Harrison and Indiana Freaking Jones, which brought it up to "great". I want more Indy, and I'd prefer if Skull weren't the last film. They just have to step up their game a notch. More

Yeah, all right...
I'm all for seeing another Indy flick. My only problem with the 4th was that they referenced the previous films too much which made it feel too much like a gimmick. Hopefully they've gone past the 'We're back!" stage and will make it far more of a stand alone adventure. I like Labeouf but if they bring him back it will feel too much like a sequel, whereas Temple and Crusade did not. More

I quite liked Crystal Skull, it was better than Temple of Doom. It was no Raiders, sure, but it was a good solid adventure film (although the alien finale did feel a bit... well, wrong). The CGI seemed a bit misplaced for Indy, but it wasn't an awful film by a long shot. Besides, it's not like they added an appendix to the Bible or anything like that, they are great films but they are only films! If they make another one, I hope it's good. Indy 4 was a massive disappointment and falls drastically short of the previous three films. The film's faults go way beyond the choice of aliens or the character of Mutt (Shia was actually pretty good) . The screenplay was the number one fault, devoid of interesting characters, sparkling dialogue or any sense of suspense. Furthermore the blatant and unchecked use of CGI went against one of the stronger elements of the series, the use of stunts and practicle effects that imbued the film with More

Hehe, I love reading some of the comments on this site. So many of the movie goers really do look at things through rose tinted spectacles. I thought the last Indy movie was great and stuck quite faithfully to the atmosphere of the first three. No I did not like the skulls (I thought it was a bit naff),and the climax was a lot to swallow quite frankly. The stupid CGI was it's biggest downfall and I don't know how much of that is down to Spielberg, to Lucas or to the special effects people. I sen More
