Seven Golden Vampires Polished Up Hammer's kung-fu horror remade? Source: Bloody Disgusting
Tentative early reports suggest that Hammer Films' 1974 martial arts Dracula epic The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires is to be remade by indie production company Spitfire PIctures.
The original is an odd collaboration between the house of horror and the famous Shaw Brothers Studio in Hong Kong, shamelessly aimed at tapping into the 70s kung-fu movie vogue. Peter Cushing as Van Helsing teams up with a Chinese family to rid a village of a vampire plague, which it turns out is being orchestrated by Dracula himself in the guise of a Shaolin monk. It is pants, and it doesn't have Christopher Lee in it.
But the argument, of course, is that it's the rubbish films that ought to be remade, so this is an intriguing prospect. Spitfire seem like a small operation to handle what's potentialy a large-ish project - their last release was the Bob Dylan-starring oddity Masked and Anonymous - but the story makes a bit more sense when you realise that Spitfire's parent company Exclusive Media also owns the current incarnation of the Hammer brand.
Have they got any money though? And can they make a better kung-fu Dracula film than Blade: Trinity? Well yes, almost certainly.

Im a big fan of the original and really don't see why/how this remake has came about. Is the world really crying out for this?
y thoughts exactly,I just don't see the point. Yes the film's no classic but it's a lot of fun and more importantly very much of it's time. The only possible improvements I can think of they could make would be to have Dracula play a bigger part and have a longer fight between Dracula and Van Helsing at the end. Other then that, why? ... Yo Christopher Lee wasn't even in it so why use his picture. It capitalized on the kung-fu
craze in the 70s and was actually quite entertaining too but who's playing who in the remake?

I agree, a remake could be quite interesting. Not sure how it would work really, but Peter Cushing's shoes are pretty big to fill. A better Dracula would be good too, of course. ... Read More

This is actually quite an entertaining Hammer horror, directed by the always solid Roy Ward Baker. No, it doesn't have Lee as Dracula, but to be honest the "rubbish" Dracula films were the last two with Lee - AD 1972 and Satanic Rites.
ut they were at least worth watching considering Lee and Cushing were the only redeemable features in the last two films.

The original is fun but shit and there's no denying it.
As long as it's remade in a low budget way it could be ok. Still don't really see the point though. ... Read More
