Duncan Jones To Escape From The Deep
Submarine thriller next for Moon helmer

Duncan Jones To Escape From The Deep

Duncan Jones – the director of the excellent sci-fi thriller, Moon – is going to get very wet with the submarine thriller Escape From The Deep.

Based on a true story, the movie will revolve around the USS Tang, a WWII submarine which was hit by one of its own torpedoes (no, really), and left to sink to the bottom of the ocean. With enemy boats dropping depth charges, the sub’s surviving crew had to make a desperate burst for freedom, which involved a perilous 180-foot swim to the surface.

Sounds like a story worth telling, and given that the British director clearly has a penchant for telling stories about people Under Pressure*, this could be one worth keeping an eye on.

Alex Kershaw will be adapting the screenplay from his own book, with Brilliant Films’ funding the movie.

But Escape From The Deep (love that title) won’t start shooting until next year, which means that it won’t be Jones’ next. That honour falls to another sci-fi, Mute, which is currently at the casting stage.

"This is a bigger, more commercial film than Moon, although it is another science fiction project," Jones told Variety. "It's a thriller set in Berlin in the future."

Well, given how good Moon is, we look forward to Mute with keen anticipation.

* Yes, Jones is David Bowie’s son, but that’s the only ropey reference we’re going to make, honest. After all, it’s not easy fitting Diamond Dogs into a sentence.
