Buffy To Return To The Big Screen?

Buffy To Return To The Big Screen?

It's a cold and rainy day, and we can only assume that that's because the Man Upstairs is also a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV show) and is depressed at the thought that a remake of 1992's Buffy the Vampire Slayer is headed to the big screen - without the involvement of character creator Joss Whedon.

Yes, rights-holders Fran Rubel Kazui and Kaz Kazui want to return Buffy to the big screen in a remake or reboot of her story. The pair bought the rights to Buffy from a then-unknown Joss Whedon in 1992, and were credited as executive producers through the show's run after Fran Rubel Kazui directed the 1992 Kirsty Swanson film of the same name: the one that everyone generally tries to pretend isn't actually associated with the beloved Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring TV franchise.

The remake / reboot / whatever isn't set up at a studio as yet, and the Kazui's haven't invited Whedon to be a part of their enterprise. They're also not planning on using any of the show's supporting characters or 'Scooby Gang', possibly because the rights issues relating to those characters are more complicated.

There's a suggestion that the fact that "into every generation a slayer is born" will allow easy rebooting of what we're assured will be a "darker, event-sized movie with franchise potential". But frankly if the Slayer's called Buffy then this is the same generation and has the potential to trample over the show's world and alienate fans as a result (unless they Maru-nate it, of course).

The Kazuis are working with Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and Doug Davison on the proposed film, and are currently meeting with writers (hey! We know one you could try: his initials are J.W.). We try hard to stay open-minded around here, but this has all the symptoms of a Bad Idea. Or are we being too harsh?

RE: Guess what guys.
Yeah but they took a brilliant script and made it funny when it should have been scary and visa versa.  And it was far too camp! I can watch it and I do like Swanson but the TV show pisses all over it. ... Read More

RE: Guess what guys.
Not really though. Obviously all two of us liked the film. The show is ace but the film is not as bad as peeps make out. For me it was my first introduction to Buffy. I said this in another thread but (deep breath) I actually prefer Swanson as Buffy. She had the whole valley girl thing down and Gellear, well she was very thin... ... Read More

RE: Guess what guys.
L: cenaris You're all going to flame me for this, I'm sure. I was unaware of the movie before I watched the TV series. Guess what? I enjoyed the movie more than the entire how many seasons that were milked out. Buffy should have stayed as the amusing, cheesy and tongue-in-cheek movie. The TV series was completely unsessasary in my opinion. A movie reboot of a movie that a TV series reboot? Not sure on this. I'll sit it out and see what happens. Flame Shield: ON! sp; Well... Read More

RE: NO
scifiwire.com/2009/05/a-new-buffy-movie-theres.php wouldn't mind if they had a new cast ala Star Trek but without Joss??? I won't be watching this if Whedon isn't involved.  Ideally I want the original cast too but that's not gonna happen.  I guess they think it would cost too much.  This is gonna be like all those horrible movie sequels example S.Darko.  We should start a petition against this movie but I'm sure someone's doing that as we speak... ... Read More

Please dont let Fran Rubel Kuzui do another film without Whendon. ... Read More

I'll see it but I don't think it will be a good idea
A remake of the original is probably the safest option (make more in line with the accepted canon) but it would make more sense to simply carry on the series' storylines. She slayer myth is a good set up at the end of the series all the potential slayers became slayers. So the film could simply be about the new girls finding their way in the world. Oh dear... not again
I will say that like everyone else here, I think this is a bad idea and I had wondered if something like this might come up after Twilight came out. However, I really felt that Buffy on TV got stale for me. I just couldn't watch it after a while. The show started off so energetic and above all, it was fun. When I decided I didn't want to watch anymore I had reached a point when I wanted to kill myself after each episode. It was just so depressing, I got sick of everyone whining all the time.
