Deadpool Spin-Off On Its Way
Ryan Reynolds gets his own movie?

06 May 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

submit to reddit

Well, yesterday we heard that Wolverine will be travelling to Japan, and hot on his heels today we hear that Deadpool is getting his own spin-off movie following the opening weekend success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and with Empire's beloved Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the Merc' with the Mouth.

This news is something that's been talked up as a possibility ever since Reynolds was cast in the first X-spinoff (and indeed even before that), and the $85 million opening weekend just proved that the demand may be there for a Deadpool movie.

WOLVERINE SPOILERS INEVITABLE IN NEXT TWO PARAGRAPHS

Now some of you who have seen Wolverine may have spotted a flaw in this plan. Yes, there's that bit at the end when Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, played by Reynolds, has been imbued with a whole heap of mutant powers, disfigured, had his mouth sewn up and then gets beheaded. Surely, one might wonder, that could be something of a hinderence to a long-running franchise. But don't be silly: this is not only the movies, it's comic-book movies, and therefore normal rules regarding the finality of death do not apply.

Hence one of those two Easter Egg endings showed Deadpool opening his eyes and not being dead after all. We're also assured that Deadpool will regain his ability to speak (also, presumably, to have a head) so that the whole "Merc with a Mouth" thing will still apply. So this all makes perfect sense.

WOLVERINE SPOILERS END

While the comic-book character of Deadpool is disfigured and wears a mask over his face, expect the studio to Judge Dredd this one and lose the facial covering, the better to allow us to appreciate those fine Reynolds looks. That said, we can apparently expect the movie to go "back to the roots" of the character, who's known for his witticisms and the fact that he knows he's in a comic and often breaks the fourth wall, speaking directly to the audience. We're kinda hoping that "back to the roots" does not mean yet another comic-book origin story, but with the project only just sent out to writers, that's a question yet to be answered.

So, good idea? Bad idea? And do you share our Reynolds love?

Totally share the Ryan Reynolds love
Ryan was absolutely awesome as Wade Wilson and in interviews seemed barely able to contain his own disappointment at the way they completely screwed the character up in the second half of Origins - especially considering that Fox seemed intent on prepping multiple characters for spin-off over telling a decent Wolverine story in the first place. If Ryan is, as he has so far hinted, allowed to have input, do things his own way and stay true to the comics, a Deadpool movie has the potential to be More

One power - it's the only way that it works
When I first heard Reynolds was playing Deadpool, I was ecstatic. Then I heard about the Deadpool/Weapon XI action figures, and I was concerned. Then I saw what they did to Deadpool in the Wolverine movie, and I was horrified. If they are going to make a Deadpool movie, they have to ditch all of the extra powers. They have to go back to Deadpool having natural agility and exceptional fighting skills with one (and only one) actual power - the uber-regeneration. Give him back his handheld swo More

RE: Deadpool Spin-Off On Its Way
This movie will be very good thoug it dependss where the movie picks up on the deadpool story, whether its pre cancer (in which case there will beprobably will be no suit) or after weapon X gave him the healing factor to combat the spread of the cancer. Whichever one they start with will be good, also during the comics you see deadpool with his mask on nearly as much as you see him in full red and black get up so a masked reynolds deadpool film it wouldnt be too bad. sn't the big difference that most of the people you are talking about have an alter ego, so the film studios get their quota of Downey Jr or Bale face time, then they can strap on the mask and be the hero. Wolverine is always Wolverine - he'd not a mild mannered shop keeper by day and a y retractable knife hands super hero by night. OL That's what I meant by making it applicable, necessary or relevant. Rumsfeld! Zygote! Spatula!
Excellent news! Having seen the Deadpool ending on Youtube before it was whipped off by the Fox Lawyer Militia, I'm less concerned about the legacy of Barakapool. As long as they get shot of the sword-arms, I'd be comfortable with building on the continuity set up for Deadpool in the Wolvie film. Reynolds won't necessarily be hidden behind makeup or mask for the Deadpool movie given the characters access to a hologram generator...was that too geeky? J More

Weapon XI isn't Deadpool! Not only is he played by a different actor (Scott Adkins) but the *THIRD* easter egg ending has Deadpool looking at Weapon XI's dead body saying 'Who're you supposed to be?' First of all, I don't see why everyone is moaning about spin offs. Deadpool is a character in his own right and has his own comic, just like most other Marvel characters. They all come from the same universe, so of course they are all going to be linked, it doesn't mean every Marvel movie is a "spin off" as such. I guess it fits the definition, but for me that's like saying The Hobbit is a "spin off" from LOTR. Having said that, I was looking forward to a Deadpool movie until Fox bent him More
