Public Enemies Trailer Now Online
Michael Mann sets Depp against Bale!

05 March 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Apple

submit to reddit

It's Heat with Tommy guns! And fedoras! And lots of Brylcreem! And Johnny Depp and Christian Bale facing off in the heart of America in the 1930s, with Michael Mann directing. Yes, it's the trailer for Public Enemies and it's online here on Yahoo! UK and the HD version here on Apple.

Judging by this trailer, we can expect Johnny Depp to play a borderline sociopath (but a really charming one) who delights in robbing the most architecturally significant banks in the West (all the better to provide soaring aerial shots of the action). Christian Bale's the cold-blooded lawman (think Equilibrium) and Billy Crudup gets prissy as legendary FBI head J. Edgar Hoover.

There's a possible spoiler in here about the fate of one character (we say possible because it's not clear how early on it happens) but otherwise this gorgeously shot piece is going to whet your appetite for the film's release on July 3.

#1 Public enemy
what an amazing looking film! ive read the book and it is a fantastic story full of everything. the trailer was amazing and has only hyped me up more. Depp looks amazing and so does Bale. (even though im not a bale fan i think he is going to give a super performace) alot of your reviews are complaing about Bale not having a big part in the trailer im not being biest but you have to remember that the main character Dillenger is played my Depp so its going to have a lot of him in the trailer. Good...
Now THIS, this is Christian Bale in a Film that looks (and more than likely will be), pretty damn good. BTW, lona_no_friends, I do agree with you that the trailer was a bit thin on the Bale footage but let's face it, Depp would steal the show even if he only had a five minute cameo in this movie. Looking forward to this - Mann is the MAN! More

looks promising but perhaps it showed a little too much of the film? More

Looks pretty damned good, but where was all the Christian Bale? I love how any film with Johnny Depp in it will focus primarily on the fact that Johnny Depp is in it. It may as well have read 'Starring JOHNNY BLOODY DEPP!!!... and a bunch of other people...' More

RE: Dillinger
Why's Mann still going for the video look? It worked for Miami Vice but here it just looks amateurish. Agree about Bale, his voice is always dull More

Dillinger
Having seen dillinger and liked it, it is brilliant to see a bank robbery film directed by Michael Mann and starring two of hollywood's greates actors. Please don't be a dissapointment. It's shot beautifully though. More

What is it with showing the whole film in the trailer? It's really annoying!! Anyway, it looks shit. I didn't actually make to the end of the trailer... More

RE: What a trailer
L: hatebox L: chrysalisloall A really good trailer I thought, good music, beautiful shots of both action and charcters (and what a voice by Billy Crudup !). Only slight downside, and I can't believe I'm saying this, is Depp. He looks incredibly bored in some shots, notably the opener talking to her about what he does. Later on, he gets better, but at times in the beginning he looks entirely uninterested. he livens up when interacting with the press a bit and when he gets the bug for More

RE: Public Enemies Trailer Now Online
Interesting to see he's using the Viper method he's been honing since Collateral on this one, a period piece. Gives it a harder, grittier edge than we're perhaps used to. There are some pretty strong links between this and Heat. Depp even utters the same line DeNiro does ("We're here for the banks money, not yours)! Looking forward to this; I for one am a little tired of seeing ye olden times through rose tinted spectacles. Lets have us some dirt and cordite. Also, Bale looks like a bad as More

More Mann Modernism
Why are Mann's movies always so lacking in feeling, cold and empty style exercises? This feels as 1930s as a modern car/communications/corporate ad… Poor Depp, poor Bale, and poor audience (who will stay away from it). More

Another good'un from the Mann-ster
There is definiatley a Heat feel to it it, and also a mix with Depp's very own Blow. Looks great, sounds great, looking forward to this a lot, though it's a shame we didn't see a lot of Bale to balance the overuse of Depp (if yoiu can overuse Depp that is). He's obviously adverse to awards so releases his films out of the loop (Novemeber - January) as his movies would win Oscars and the such aplenty - especially the almighty Heat. More

Some wee just came out...
I'm loving the look of the HD cameras personally, only Michael Mann movies look this way because he uses natural light where possible and it gives all his movies a real immediacy! This could look like just another smooth, hollywood biopic in the vain of Sam Mendes etc but he's managed to give a film set in the 1930's a realistic, documentary film that I feel draws you into the action - you feel like you're actually in the bank while the robbery is occuring! Also, this film marks the return of DP More

HD
I'm sorry, but it looks like some on set footage and not like a movie. I accepted the HD look in the context of modern urban movies like Collateral and Miami Vice, but it's just wrong for a period piece. Oh so wrong. Yet I agree, Fincher managed to make Zodiac NOT look like HD, so why does this look like a high quality home movie? More

Posted by Manfrendshensindshen at 11:52 on 05 March 2009 | Report This Post

It looks terribly, awfully good. And it being shot on video does look odd, but it might be a quirk that adds quality rather than detracts. More

How come when Fincher uses digital filmmaking it looks how cinema should look but when Mann uses it, it looks like a home movie. Miami Vice wasn't great and i'm not blown away with this trailer. God i hope i'm wrong. More

Looks awesome! Not sure they had to give away most of the story line in the trailer. Most people are going to be sold on the poster, cast and of course the Mann!! Maybe more of a teaser trailer would of been better. Like the original Heat trailer. More

That looks brilliant from what I can tell, had no idea that's how the film would plan out - I simply thought it would be a basic cat and mouse in similar vein to Heat (a workaholic cop on the trail of a likeable professional thief) but the jail break aspect looks very interesting.
