Hollywood still hasn't made a great film based on a video game, but lor' bless those plucky rapscallions, they keep trying. And today Warners has announced that they're having another go at the Tomb Raider franchise, with a reimaging aimed at launching Lara Croft back into the big time.
Readers (male readers, certainly) will remember that Angelina Jolie previously played the action-loving, frightfully posh but totally hot-pants-wearing archaeologist* in two films or 2001 and 2003: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.** Her love interests were played by Daniel Craig and Gerard Butler respectively, who we're assuming learned how to kick the ten kinds of action ass they kicked in Bond and 300 respectively from Jolie.
This time the plan is very much to reboot the franchise, with a "reimagining" of the character, her origins, love interest and main villain. We bet they a) make it darker and b) change the bit where she's an English aristocrat.
There is no cast, writer or director yet, so this is some way off, but could it be the game adaptation we've all been waiting for? And if they got someone hot enough in the hot pants, will anyone care?
*We use this term loosely. VERY loosely.
**We've always wondered why the colon between "Croft" and "Tomb" disappeared second time around. Maybe the answer is contained in the mysterious Cradle of Life.
All good suggestions (Johnny Depp should be in everything). I wonder how young they're looking at going - should we be considering people like Emma Watson or Kaya Scodelario? Sadly I think Rachel Weisz is too 'mature' for the role now, she'd be in her 40s by the time they started shooting. :( Shame - she'd have been a great choice. Kate Beckinsale is definitely on the bland side, and only about 3 years younger than Weisz anyway, but Gemma Arterton could be good. Good call. ... Read More
Who is a sexy but (potentially) athletic Brit actress who could play the role - Rachel Weisz toned up would be great, Kate Beckinsale would be Brit but bland, Gemma Arterton possibly? ... Read More
Sadly the word is that Angelina isn't interested in coming back, and they're planning on jumping on the current trend and doing an origins story of sorts, with a younger Lara Croft. With that in mind who would you want? I'm still convinced there's a good Tomb Raider story to be told. It's got a good central character, and could include some great Indiana Jones style adventures.

Jolie is not that old, have her play Lara Croft again (just don't have her punching a shark in the nose) she is Lara Croft not Megan Fox I can't see her pulling off the accent either by any means. ... Read More

I just couldn't buy Megan Fox as a classy, well-educated, aristocratic, English archeologist. Angelina Jolie managed to pull it off, but she's a brilliant actress. Anyway, why do so many English female characters end end up being played by American actresses? ... Read More
I know it's not really her thing and she'd never do it, but a good script, a good director and Rebecca Hall as Lara could bring a bit of believability to the historical expert aspect of the character. Whether she can do action remains to be seen, but at least she's really English and a bit more authentic than just sticking a hot brunette in some tiny shorts to get the teen boys in. ... Read More
Good to see some other people liked the first 2 films. Perfect Popcorn films and La Jolie looked great. As far fetched and silly as any Bond or Indiana Jones film, I wonder if it's more to do with Angelina not conforming to the accepted roles that attractive women should play? The films are based on computer games.why expect anything other than entertainment from them? ... Read More
