Frenzy didn't mass shift.
He was a few feet tall and transformed into a tape deck. He had a fight and was mangled down to just his head (and or torso). Then he transformed into the phone.

I will consider myself schooled in Trasnformers lore then! I do appreciate there have been several (crapier) recent CGI versions of the transformers a bit like Power Rangers in various context but I think it's fair to say the reason this Trasnformers movie was made and has the mass apeal it does is because of the iconic 80's versions. Good Lord it looks like things have gone to hell since I first signed in this morning. Making Soundwave into a telecommunications satelite seems perfectly valid to me.

Fair enough to an extent but Megatron was basically a flying cannon of some description, Soundwave the jet doesn't even have a tentative link to the charcter it's based on. Like I said if it's not workable then it's not workable, just consign them to contexual drawing board. Besides if Bay was so worried about continuity to scale case how could he explain Frenzy transfroming into a mobile phone?

Michael Bay made it clear before the first film that he won't have any Transformers who would inexplicably change mass/size in during transformation.
That's why Megatron didn't turn into a handgun.
So why should he have a retro-Soundwave in this one who transform into something even smaller?

I'm all for not having mass shifting (turning a 20ft robot into a hand held boom box), but this Sound Wave looks too much like an Insecticon. Has none of the original charm. I just hope they have the original voice for him. I do have faith in Bay (when it comes to Transformers) to do a decent job, so I'll hold judgment until after I watch the movie More

Soundwave is a cassett deck that ejects mini decepticons for goodness sake, update him to a CD player or some other mini decepticon spewing sound machine to make it relevant for this generation but he isn't a fucking jet!!! If you can't fit him in then just don't use him you already have Starscream or Scourge (I think). That has single handly sapped a good chuck of the enthusiasm I had for this film I'd have been content enough with no soundwave but half arsed pointless "updated" sound More

Admittedly, I'd say we're all disappointed slightly (and I am speaking for everyone here) as Soundwave was pretty perfect aesthetically, but he doesn't look all that bad and does fit nicely into the Bay's new style of robots.
