Guttenberg Talks Three Men And A Bride
And... Police Academy 8??? Can it be?

Guttenberg Talks Three Men And A Bride

Working at Empire, you can get a little blasé about reporting the big movie news stories every day. But every now and again, something comes along that rocks your socks, blows your mind and reminds you why we fell in love with this topsy-turvy business we call show in the first place. And here it is:

Steve Guttenberg says that not only are there plans afoot to make a third Three Men And A Baby film, but that Police Academy 8 is in the works!

Now, if your world has remained resolutely unshattered by this news, then either: a) you didn’t grow up in the Eighties, so you have no idea how resonant these films are, or how big a star Guttenberg once was (bigger than Tom Cruise, Tiger Woods and that bloke with the big hair from Twilight combined), or b) you know full well who Steve Guttenberg is now and you highly doubt the chances of him being able to get a green light at a traffic junction, let alone for two movies.

But let’s not spoil it, shall we?

"Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and I are looking to make another Three Men and a Baby film," Guttenberg said over the weekend. And, given that all three men aren’t quite the stars they once were, who can blame them for revisiting the scene of their greatest triumph, in which they played three heterosexual life partners who – and you’ll like this – found themselves playing father to an adorable infant. Now, over twenty years, the new movie will see them attend the young lady’s wedding.

"It's called Three Men and A Bride,” said Guttenberg. “The script is pretty much written and we are really keen to get that made. We're very hopeful."

As are we, Steve. As are we. But only if Leonard Nimoy, the director of 1987’s Three Men And A Baby, can be lured back into the director’s chair. If he can do Spock one more time, he can do this.

Speaking of going back, Guttenberg had this to say about Police Academy 8, which will see him reprise the role of charming chancer, Carey Mahoney. “We are doing a new movie and it is going to be great fun," he said. "A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return.”

“I know Kim [Cattrall, who starred in the original] and Sharon [Stone, the love interest of Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol] have been asked but they haven’t said yes yet. It would be really great to have them on board.” It would but, y'know...

There are also rumours that Guttenberg may direct the new Police Academy movie, which would really signal an about-turn on his part. He left the series after Citizens On Patrol, but he now says that he regrets that decision. And if you regret not starring in Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach, Police Academy 6: City Under Siege and Police Academy: Mission To Moscow, then you know your career hasn’t quite turned out the way you’d hoped.

More on both these astonishing-sounding movies as we get it.

3 men and PA 8
I'm an 80's kid in the flesh and I have to say i'm happy to return in a way to the series of films. Looking forward to Police Adademy 8 and would like to warn the teens of today that Steve Guttenberg plus all other 80's greats will always be way bigger than any nowaday star even Harry Potter. The latest Three Men And A Baby film sounds just fine to me and will book my tickets in advance. BRING ON THE 80'S!!!!!! ... Read More

What about "the curious case of cocoon 3" where all the old fogeys from the original have now grown so young they are now babies and Steve Guttenburg ropes in his bessy mates Tom "the Tache" Selleck, and Ted "Cheers" Danson to help him out with the bairns - throw in Courteney Cox (original Cocoon) to cop off with Tom Selleck (a la Friends) - get Brad Pitt to reprise his Benjamin Button role as a bit of an "in" joke, chuck in the rest of the Friends cast f... Read More

I think he's just practicing his panto lines here.
'I'm going to do another Three Men and a baby film and Police Academy 8', and we say 'OH NO YOUR NOT'!!!!!!!!. Hollywoods haven't scrapped that far down the barrell - yet.. I know that Dom (or Dave) from Radio 1's The Chris Moyles Show worships you Steve but I'm sorry to say this mate but you're a nobody now (as is Tom Selleck) so just enjoy doing panto like Henry Winkler (although he will never be a nobody as hey - sorry heyyyeee- he was The Fonz) and then go back and do a tv drama/sci-fi sh... Read More

Yay for Steve!
Although I would have thought Short Circuit would be a more obvious revival. I also see scope in a darker take on the Three Men saga. The Bride, having been the butt of jokes all her life, goes on a roaring rampage of revenge scouring America until she finds Dansen, Guttenburg and Selleck. Only when all names have been crossed off the list can she find inner peace. Forget Nimoy - How about Guttenburg and Tarantino? or even better, Guttenburg and Ratner? That's a sure-fire way to have a revival a... Read More
