Exclusive: First Public Enemies Pictures
See Depp and Bale in Mann's latest

27 November 2008  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

It's one of the most exciting films of next year, and we have the first images of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in Michael Mann's Public Enemies

Described as a sort of Heat II, the film tells the story of charismatic criminal gang leader John Dillinger (Depp) and determined lawman Melvin Purvis (Bale), the FBI agent tracking him down. Also in the cast is Marion Cotillard as Dillinger's girlfriend, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, Leelee Sobieski and Emilie de Ravin, with Billy Crudup as the legendary J. Edgar Hoover.

The film's out on July 3 next year, but we have more pics and an exclusive interview with Michael Mann in the January issue of Empire, out now.

Oh brilliant! I have been so wrapped up in anticipation for Fincher's Benjamin Button movie that I have really not thought much about next year's movies...until now! I was actually inspecting some kind of western but i guess i misheard what this film was about when it was first announced a while back. And i reckon people are right too: this will be Bale's movie... More

This is the title.
I think Bale is going to totally own this film. It's great to see Depp doing something a bit more real for a change. No doubt Mann will be the real star though. He's a fantastic director. More

Most anticipated film of 2009?
I can't wait for this film to come out, I think it has one of the best ensemble casts I've seen since The Godfather. It feels like I've been counting down the days to it's release forever! I'm really looking forward to seeing Depp in a role that's a little different from the characters he usually protrays. I thought his performance in Donnie Brasco was great, but I have a feeling that his protrayal of Dillinger will blow Brasco out of the water, and hopefully win him an oscar, coz th More

Unsure....
There is no denying the quality of the cast in this film, and having read a few of the script drafts online it sounds amazing. However, there was an early preview few weeks ago and the review makes for some worrying reading, check it out for yourselves.... http://latinoreview.com/news/reader-r eview-an-early-look-at-michael-mann-s-public-enemies-57 21 More

RE: RE:
L: Rgirvan44 This is going to be so so great. Anyone got a feeling that 2009 is going to be one of those mentioned in "best year for film?" discussions? sp; i hope so, this year has certianly been fairly weak, especially compared to last year. More

RE:
Looks interesting this, i too am a huge Mann fan hopefully he well let the plot do the talking like Heat and Collateral and not be overly indulgent with details which hamper the narrative. Great cast. More

Great to see johnny depp playing a realistic character again. I was getting a bit sick of him being what I'm gonna call "kooky" More

Ha Johnny Depp looks like Pikey from Dads Army.
You just know that in between takes he does his imperssonation of Edward G. Robinson. Bale looks out of place in that get up, but then so do most people in those black and white 30's&40's movies. Should be great with Mann at the helm. Looking forward to it. More

BatFan, I'm with you. I sort of got used to the digital look, but combine it with a period setting? I'm not sure. Someone should phone Gordon Willis and ask him about his opinion. More

RE: Exclusive: First Public Enemies Pictures
Looking hugely forward to this however there is one thing that irks me. Mann is shooting this on Hi Definition a la Collateral and Miami Vice. Not sure it'll look right on a film with a period setting... More

Nice!
Loved HEAT, Loved COLLATERAL, I'm even partial to MIAMI VICE. looking forward to this - Bale can do much better than the overrated poo-heap that was Dark Knight (to hell with his Salvation as well). More
