Jack Black Takes On Gulliver's Travels
Big actor to walk among tiny people

06 November 2008  |  Written by Emily Phillips  |  Source: Variety

Jack Black is set to make his distinctive mark on the classic Jonathan Swift tale, Gulliver's Travels. Black will play Lemuel Gulliver, an intrepid travel writer on an assignment to the Bermuda Triangle who is washed up on the island of Lilliput, where all the inhabitants are very tiny indeed.

Shark Tale's Rob Letterman is to direct a script by
Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller and Shrek writer Joe Stillman, which will form what we can only assume will be a mix of live-action and computer animation - with some singing, dancing and general mayhem added for good measure, naturally.

Gulliver's Travels has been the victim of several film and TV adaptations over the years, the most recent debacle being the 1996 version starring Ted Danson and wife Mary Steenburgen. Letterman's update, though, will bring the story out of the 1700s and into the 21st century, opening the door to all kinds of contemporary tomfoolery.

RE: Jack Black Takes On Gulliver's Travels
Another great story is given the inevitable 'comedy' treatment. he 1996 'debacle' is highly regarded by people who aren't trying to be trendy.    More

I like it too.
Empire you have been massively wrong many times - the Star Wars prequels getting good reviews, and recently giving the 'Not-A-Proper-Bond-Film-But-Some-Deleted-Scenes-from-Ca sino-Royale' Quantum of Solace four stars. It was inconsiquentially dull. The Hallmark mini series was top. Even Danson was good. More

Have you even seen the 1996 version?
Ditto to you all. I never thought I'd find myself jumping to the defence of Ted Danson, but I really warmed to the 1996 version and it seems closer in my mind to a decent adaptation than anything staring Jack Black could be (no disrespect to JB). I agree on paper that Danson + wife + TV movie + English period setting = debacle, but in reality I remember it as enjoyable, well made and with a genuine emotional core. Plus it's got some awesome British acting legends in it. What about it precise More

I have to agree - I am sceptical about JB taking this on. It's a serious satire that deserves serious treatment, which is extremely relevant now. I can't imagine JB interacting with the Houyhnhnms without destroying the whole tone and aim of the piece. Wrong. More

I'm afraid that I have to agree with the ageless stranger. I remember loving that 1996 version when I was younger. Whether or not the rose tinted specs are making it a classic in my mind I am not sure but I sure loved it at the time. I fear that this new version will be the debacle... More

1996 debacle?
Fuck right off with that crazy talk! That was great and true to the spirit of the book. I will however bet money that this film will involve at least one scene of Gulliver causing a fart hurricane, and then cutting down an entire forest to make a guitar. More
