Jack Reacher Headed To Screen
One Shot For History Of Violence Writer

26 September 2008  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

submit to reddit

Lee Child's enormously successful Jack Reacher series is finally headed to the screen, with the news that A History of Violence scribe Josh Olsen is set to adapt One Shot for the screen.

The ninth Jack Reacher book, One Shot starts with the killing of five innocent civilians in a shopping mall by a sniper. A man is arrested, apparently red-handed, but proclaims his innocence and demands that former United States Army Police Major Jack Reacher be contacted. Sure enough, when Reacher (now a drifter) turns up, he smells a rat and sets about finding the real culprit.

Reacher is described in the books as a blond haired, blue-eyed 6'5" giant of a man, with a penchant for coffee and the blues and an uncanny ability to know the time despite rarely wearing a watch.

So it looks like Paramount believes that old Mae West line, about a hard man being good to find. Olsen compared the story to that of Dirty Harry, and says he plans on writing a "tough, smart, action-oriented thriller".

not tom cruize for f***s sake he's the exact opposite of Jack Reacher and if you think he will be good 'cause of mission impossible... the Jack Reacher series is nothing like Mission impossible! I don't think they could have chosen a worse choice to play him! which book are they making, anyway? if it's 61 hours maybe tom is playing the bad guy. how is Jack Reacher a short twig with a black broom on his head, he's a 6'4" heap of muscle with a blonde crew cut, for goodness sake! RE: Just Say NO!
JUST SAY NO! is an online petition to at least try to dissuade Cruise from doing Reacher this terrible injustice. It doesn't matter who you think is right for the role I think every single Reacher fan agrees Cruise is just - he's just - ughhhhh AHUGH UGH BHGUDH..... Sorry about that - I've just vomited with impotant rage at the thought of it! More

Who I picture when i read Reacher novels
I dont know about anyone else, but when I read the Reacher novels, I always picture Ray Stevenson, (Rome, Book of Eli, Thor, etc). He's exactly the right height, tough as ol' boots, and is a very good actor. (Not to mention he's built like a brick sh.... out house). For me there's no one else it could be. Tom Hardy: too young, Hugh Jackman: too short, Gerard Butler: all of the above plus crap actor. Whoever they choose, all i care is that they are capable of doing the character justice. Reacher More

It needs to be an unknown actor who is between 6"4 and 6"6. I'm a professional actor and I'm an avid reader of the series. Originally I didn't want there to be any films made of the books because the way I build the scene and the characters in my head is perfect to me, and it will be completely different to everybody else's perception, but everybody will see it the way they want to see it using their own interpretation. A film would give us a definite article, and it wouldn't be perfec More

Nobody has mentioned Gerard Butler. He'd do the role justice. I'm just about to start reading 61 hours, I hope it is as good as the last few I've read. One Shot got me hooked on Reacher. More

Lots of good names, but you have all missed one
Hugh Jackman could play the role well but he is just too good looking, not nearly rough enough. Honestly I think we should all consider David Boreanaz. Sure he played a goody two shoes vamp in Buffy but he seriously kicked ass in "Bones". I can't think of a better actor to play the role and do it well. If David isn't picked it would have to be an unknown actor, but please no one form the world of wrestling or ultimate fighting. We want justice being done to the character of Reacher. More

RE: Jack Reacher Headed To Screen
I'm a massive fan of this series and I'm afraid that most of you are way off the mark...   Clint Eastwood??? Even as a young man he would never be right for Reacher. Yes, he's got the attitude but not the size. Jack Reacher's size is a major part of his character which must make it to the screen intact to be authentic. Very few of the actors mentioned have it.   Out of all the suggestions Jackman is probably the best but he still falls short. Just maybe if he's beefe More

RE: Jack Reacher Headed To Screen
If we are talking really Tall, Blonde with Blue eyes then True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård should be a contender. The look would be right but as he hasn't been in much it is hard to tell his range as an actor.   I didn't see him in HBO's Generation Kill, but at he has experiance playing military. More

About time
Finally going to bring Reacher to the bing screen, just hope who ever is involved does the writing and feel of the books justice. As for who would play the man himself, i'd like to put Josh Holloway(Sawyer form Lost) forward as a very suitable choice, he'd nned a hair cut and to put on a few pounds, but i'm sure he could do a good job. Jack Reacher = Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman is perfect to play reacher. Almost. Statham is wrong, Bruce Willis is wrong; both have the wrong look and are not tall enough. Eastwood would have been perfect as a younger man. It is hard to get it dead on right when casting a book character- ask whoever cast Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt- I think Jackman would do the character justice. Jack Reacher Headed to Screen
I'm a Jack Reacher "totally committed" fan. I've read every book and each time I think it's better then the last. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why a movie or at least a TV series has not been created on the Reacher character. Reacher is a unique character that would be interesting to both men and certainly women. I think a totally new actor should play Reacher and it would have to be someone with military experience so it would be authentic. I would love to see someon More

There can be only one
As a massive fan of the entire series I think one shot would be the logical choice to introduce movie fans to the theme that Lee Child has created, as it's a short story that will translate well to the screen. For me I feel the author had Clint Eastwood in mind when he wrote this character as the no nonesense attitude of a man that retaliates only when provoked while always doing the morally right thing in the end reflects Dirty Harry, of that I have no doubt. Given that time has moved on I sus More

t to agree, Vince Vaughn is too comedic to play reacher and has not the physical size for the character and if they find the right person to play reacher they should start with the enemy not one shot because i hate prequels. More

FInally, casting will be difficult....
I'm a huge fan of the books, but there are much better books earlier in the series that would make great films, i thought the same about Clive Cusslers Dirk Pitt adventures, but they have been done terribly to date. Would have been excellent with the right cast and adaption!!! If the casting is right, they stay faithfull to the story and atmosphere of the books I think this will be a great film and hopefully spawn sequels or prequels too!! Any ideas on who could seriously play him? He needs to be 6'5" so it rules out Statham who is 5'10". The only current actor who is tall enough and big enough would be The Rock! I think he could play it with the same sort of character he was in Walking Tall. More

I love these books, they're just f**king ace to put it bluntly; and One Shot, is one of the best in the series. I just pray they pull it off, casting wise, it's going to be pretty tricky.
