American Psycho: The Musical Patrick Bateman to sing on Broadway Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Movie fans who are not averse to the smell of the greasepaint will have noticed how a lot of their favourite flicks are being translated into big-budget theatre shows. Why, the past few months alone have seen the launch of Gone With The Wind The Musical, Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert with Jason Donovan and Rain Man starring Josh Hartnett. And let's not forget the hugely popular likes of The Lion King, The Sound Of Music and Billy Elliot among many others.
So it's both surprising and, well, not to hear that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, American Psycho is being adapted into a Broadway musical.
Currently in production, the tale of Wall Street investment banker Patrick Bateman and his propensity for killing people in increasingly violent ways doesn't necessarily strike us as perfect sing-a-long material but you can't deny the power of the movie's great 80s-centric soundtrack.
Ellis and Edward R. Pressman, the producer of Mary Harron's 1999 film adaptation, will serve as consulting producers on the project and while no director, book writer or songwriters have yet been brought on board the project, it's hoped that the show will be staged by 2010.
Music rights have yet to be secured, but the producers are plumping for songs from the likes of Talking Heads, Genesis and, of course, Huey Lewis And The News.
actually...weirdly, even though normally sumin like this would make me cringe i think this could work, i mean Bateman is pretty obsessive with his music anyway, and those song titles suggested so far are brilliant.
I shall remain intrigued till i hear more. ... Read More

What made the film so brilliant is Christian Bales' pitch perfect performance making Patrick Batemen horrorific and hilarious. His comments about the genius of both Phill Collins and Huey Lewis just before commiting brutal murders perfectly comments on the horrors of 80's culture as much as the darkness within Batemen himself.

I'd be worried if it were another production full of 80's pop songs (although for context they'd need to include some in the background). But I can see it working well in the Sweeney Todd mode. I'm not sure how graphic it should or should not be, there are scenes in the book that would have made the film unwatchable because of the violence, and I assume the same could be true of a stage musical. It does of course, have the potential to exploit the moments of (black) comedy that worked in t... Read More
Dear god no! I shouldn't even have to say why, it's just a bad idea. It's such a good book and movie because it is dark and edgy with unsettling humour to it. Having Patrick Bateman suddenly burst into song is surely going to destroy that?! ... Read More
