I think people seem to be missing the possibility that a 3rd movie was planned from the outset. The ending of TDK appeared, to me at least, to be setting the scene for a 3rd film.
The ambiguity over wether 2Face is dead or not, what happened to The Joker, Batman excepting his lot as a villainous figure (very un-Hollywood if that really is the end of the story). So, yeah...I think a threequel was telegraphed.
But then Ledger died.
Yeah, they could re-cast, but after the incredibl More

First off: they better not call it The Dark Knight Returns. Why not just steal a good-sounding title from one of the graphic novels like The Long Halloween etc.
Secondly: the riddler is way too much like the joker to be a stand-alone villain. I would personally make it so that it was a conflict between two combatting super-villains, eg. Penguin vs. Riddler with the Battyboy caught up in the middle.also doing one about a lesser-known villain would be cool

Isn't it supposed to be ambiguous? Dent's death makes more sense in the context of the film - Batman taking the blame for Dent's murders and protecting his reputation means nothing if it turns out he's still alive after all, and he only killed Two-Face to stop Gordon's son dying (we know from Batman Begins that he already has a hazy definition of what it actually means to kill someone if he's prepared to let a man fall to his death).

This whole "dead/not dead" business is ignoring the beauty of the ambiguity, which is something Nolan is following from the comics. Within his narrative, Dent is the tragic hero so he is dead, but Nolan also left it open for future filmmakers to explore the character (good = Nolan's Two-Face was brilliant but a unique interpretation, he didn't have the split personality). yeh, i think alot of people were hoping dent wasn't dead simply because we hate it when villians are just killed off (as it seems to happen in most super hero movies) and the funeral could very well have been a cover up to protect his life. It was left a little vague, but its a shame. At least with Ra's he could come back (anyone who reads the comics will back me up on this)

Isn't necessarily dead. In the comics he uses 'Lazarus Pits' to resurrect himself, so he could easily return to the franchise.

I'm pissed off, this has kind of ruined my opinion on the Dark Knight now to some extent. Having seen it four times, I kept a close eye on Mr Dent after he'd fallen off the building and you can see him breathing. Also, how can Batman survive the same fall?! WTF's up with that?! It feels like such a waist of time to see this hero become the villain for 2 minutes just for him to die at the end! Christor Nolan, you have gone down in my estimations!

I'm not sure how they can top The Dark Knight, but certainly that's not a reason not to try. However, that being said, I really don't know who could be the villain. Catwoman? No thanks.... (although one of the other posters suggestions of Carla Gugino is spot on) Riddler? Nooooooooo! I just don't see who could be the villain. Bane, definitely not in Nolan's world, who else is there? Mad Hatter? Penguin? Scarface? None of them fit. Maybe they could incorporate the John Paul valley storyline with More

Gosh, I got well upset when Harvey Dent died and started crying. My mum told me if he might return in the third one but I knew that he wouldn't return anyway. It's a shame because Aaron Eckhart was a brilliant Two-Face and it would have been great that he would return with the Riddler. Johnny Depp is a perfect choice and now, the movie would be very interesting. More

| The Riddler |
Anyone else thinking Depp playing the Riddler would be done too much like Ledger & Joker? So No thank you. Something different is needed, and Sowasred has convinced me Nightwing is a good idea. A major villain would still be required so Bats could "redeem" himself in the public eye though. As for Nolans realistic universe, the supersonic sonar radar mobile phone trick anyone? What tosh. Why do folk keep banging on about using the obvious villains yet again ie. Riddler (my choice being Casey Affleck, Viggo Mortenson/Greg Kinnear btw) Catwoman and so forth. Surely it would be more intriguing to have characters not yet utilised such as Rupert Thorne (Brian Cox), Roland Daggett (Guy Pearce), Hugo Strange (Bill Murray), Black Mask (Joaquin Phoenix/Benecio Del Toro/Vincent Gallo) etc. Ras Al Ghul and Scarecrow were villains not used previously and look how well that turned out. They already set up the idea of Batman inspiring other people to become vigilantes, why couldn't he inspire a guy who's actually *good* at it, and doesn't feel the need to dress like Batman? Then you'd have Bats getting all pissed off cos he's delusional enough to think he's the only one capable of washing the scum off the streets, and you'd also kinda be getting Robin in there too, just circumventing all the camp crap. On top of all that, Batman took the heat for those murders so, as far as oth More

Wow, good good pick Malkovic for the Riddler... never thought of that one but it would definately work under the guidance of Nolan. Personally I'd like (and expect) It'll be Catwoman with the history between the two, I can imagine the tumultuous nature of their love story (ala Alfred(s) and his loves from the Prestige) could be handled very well by the Nolans and the death of Rachel Daws would suggest a natural progression to that one. It's all well and good picking who you want to be in the "next" batman film. But the only people I want to see attached is the Nolan bros. Chris Nolan hasn't agreed to anything yet, and I seriously doubt he'll want to either. He's taken this particular project where he wanted to take it. He and his brother are hungry guys. Probably easily bored too. If he doesn't commit WB's new brief to some lesser director will be "do a Nolan" no doubt. And we all know what happened last ti More

| Very good. |
I didn't like it when they killed off the villains in the original series but here it makes sense as it did with Ra's. They (Wayne and Gordon) were protecting Harvey AND Gotham from what he became. If you had him alive and in Arkham it would've undone everything Dent, Rachel, Gordon and the Bat had struggled to do in the film and meant that Rachel's death and Dent's fate were all for nothing. The greater good, if you will. But then... Is he in a secret cell in Arkham??? Hmm....

Its good that Two Face won't be making a come back, when was the funeral for Harvey Dent? Did I miss that??? Or was it after the credits rolled, either way which ever villian they decide on, I doubt it will be played by anyone super famous like Depp for example... but if we're talking casting The Riddler, I would have to put my vote to Paul Bettany. Catwoman, Rachel Weisz... Killer Croc... hmmm not sure about that one, though to memory wasn't he the one responsible for killing the original Robin More
