Fourth Beverly Hills Cop Planned
Eddie Murphy's back, Ratner to direct

29 May 2008  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Variety

Rocky. Rambo. Die Hard. Indiana Jones. Wait, there's one '80s action franchise that hasn't recently had a fourth instalment! What about Beverly Hills Cop? Is it racism? We were going to write an article called 80s Action Franchises Are Sitting On Top Of The World, but now we might as well call it 80s Action Franchises Can Sit On Top Of The World Just As Long As They Don't Star A Black Man, Cause...* Oh, wait. They've just announced a Beverly Hills Cop IV, with Eddie Murphy set to return as Axel Foley. Er. Carry on.

Yes, Murphy is back in the role that transformed him from comedy hit to megastar and allowed his entourage to swell from zero to 107 (probably). He pitched the project to Paramount, who leapt aboard the idea, having recently worked with Murphy on the upcoming Nowhereland.

The studio talked to a number of directors before choosing Brett Ratner for the job, presumably having realised that the Rush Hour films are wannabe BHCs anyway, and that this sort of material should play very close to Ratner's strengths.

There's no writer or plot as yet, but we're going to go ahead and guess that  Axel Foley (Murphy) will find himself investigating a murder in which he has a personal stake in Beverly Hills. Fast-talking and much culture-clash will follow if you ask us. I know, we're crazy that way.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce, with original producer Jerry Bruckheimer apparently not involved. Expect some explosions anyway; just maybe not as many.

So, does this bring a sense of completion to your 80s nostalgia? Is there anyone else you'd like to see return? And will Ratner do it justice?

*For the uninitiated / forgetful, this is a riff on Foley's efforts to scam his way in to the Beverly Palm Hotel in the first film.

RE: Fourth Beverly Hills Cop Planned
With most of this current rash of 80's franchise remakes, refreshes and reimaginings, you can pretty well guarantee that they will each make money as there is a captive audience which will definitely go and see it. Look at what happened with Indy 4: 'mixed' reviews but most fans of the original films went along anyway, 'just in case it was good'.   With the new Rambo and Rocky films, I think it was clear that these were one-offs to (a) satisfy the fans that had wanted new episodes for More

Bring it on..
This is just what the doctor ordered for Mr. Murphy. However, this cannot be a watered down, "cakesucker" / "muddy funsters" esque family jaunt courtesy of those truly wise film excecs in Hollywood. Murphy needs to let rip, preferably, in Brett "detroyer of franchises" Ratners face. The only sour note is his inclusion on the project. More

More racist jokes? Erm... wahay!?
A sign that Hollywood is getting desperate and that Brett wants to make another Rush Hour film but no one will see it so this is the next best thing for him. Although to be fair Eddy Murphy needs a film to star in before his career vanishes. This could be good but Rush Hour 3 and X-men3 were a little bland. More

RE: Fourth Beverly Hills Cop Planned
I know Murphy is pretty much a cheesy family film sell out these days, but I've got no problem with a 4th BHC. The difference with this franchise is that it went way downhill after the first, so there should be no expectations for this one. I'm a big fan of the 1st one, Murphy has never been better (Trading Places coming a close second), memorable lines and set-pieces, with a good blend of comedy and violence that only the 80s could do. If Murphy plays Foley as the foul-mouthed, wise-cracking, More

it's a shame that at some point Eddie Murphy actually turned into a real life version of Kit Ramsey at some point. i always thought 48 hours was a far better movie that Beverly hills cop and for me the Beverley hills cop movies have aged really pretty badly, especially the second one, that just has nothing to it in terms of the gags or the story. the first movie is just a ninety minute ad for lucky strike cigarettes as well. the only thing those movies had going fo More

Well, I'd rather see Eddie Murphy back in a role I want to see him in than starring in the gubbins that he has been in of late. I'n with The_Hat on this one: much wailing and gnashing of teeth, the end of days is upon us! Murphy is desperate to revive his career after all but killing it off in Norbit and BHC4 will probably see a turn around in his fortunes. The film itself will still suck though. What made the first one (and probably the second) funny was his famously foul mouth delivered at 100mph. God no..
So what other action franchises from the 80's featured a black star Helen? The racism comment seems somewhat misjudged and doesn't really add up when you think about it. Anyway, this is a horrible idea and Brett Ratner should be shot. More

dubious source material aside, surely the combination of ratner and murphy is illegal under some kind of human rights law?? More

RE: What the heck?
Beverley Hills Cop worked because Murphy was fresh and funny at the time and quite charming. Now he is a big, arrogant twat who believes his own hype and is surrouned by yes men. Its not possible to make a decent BHC movie because Murphy just isn't the same person. Oh and BHC 3 was rubbish.... More

What the heck?
I'll admit I have a special place in my heart for the franchises I grew up with. At the tender teen years I was watching Indiana Jones on TV and the Last Crusade at the cinema; Die Hard was a perennial favourite on the VCR; Rocky was seldom not watched; but with the latest selection of these franchises hitting the cinema I think they're struggling to live up to the past and the myth and aura that surrounds the franchises as time passes. With so much fond feeling for the films of the 80's/90's More

Important Characters besides Axel Foley
I just had a look at Judge Reinhold = Det. Sgt. Billy' Rosewood ....he's changed a lot! But I do hope they keep him on, he was great. And what about Bronson Pinchot = Serge, surely they have to bring him back. He was hilarious! More

Oh no, not another one! Would somebody please kick Hollywood in the groin a couple of times for churning out these 80s action movie reboots. It is worrying to see such lack of new ideas. More

Let's be honest... this movie is going to bomb. Ratner has a fan base of less than zero; Mister Murphy's star has sunk pretty low with all the fat suits over the past decade, and unless they reinvent the central concept, it's not what people are going to see these days. But then they did go back to Rambo, which I thought was impossible, so you never know. Go Brett! More
