Well, this is a little bit of an odd one. A sequel to The Descent is in the works. That's no surprise, since the film cost about $10 million and made $57 million internationally and was really rather great and pant-soilingly scary. But the plot is rather surprising. Anyone who hasn't seen the first film should probably read no further because spoilers are necessary in discussing the plans for the follow-up.
The story at the Hollywood Reporter sums up the sequel plot thusly: "The script sees the survivor forced back into the system of caves she battled her way out of in the first film, in a bid to locate the rest of her group". We're not sure if survivor should be survivors, since both Shauna MacDonald (Sarah) and Natalie Mendoza (Juno) are reprising their roles.
Thing is, Sarah didn't actually make it out of the caves in the first film, except in the American version, which edited out the gloomy final scene of Sarah still trapped in the cave and seemingly bonkers. So, who do they mean by the survivor, if the singular is correct? If it's Juno, then US viewers will be confused. If it's Sarah, then UK viewers will be a touch baffled and forgiven for thinking they're watching a zombie movie. If we're following the path that Sarah didn't survive, then what is Shauna MacDonald doing in the film? The confusion is hurting our heads.
Neil Marshall won't be returning to direct, but will remain as producer with Christian Colson. Helming duties will instead be taken by the original movie's editor, Jon Harris. The script is written by James Watkins, who penned the under-rated horror My Little Eye. New cast members include Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern, Douglas Hodge and Krysten Cummings.

l hinted previously that the crawlers might have been a construction of Sarah's mind and that she actually went mad and killed the group herself.hat's not possible since the crawlers are visible to the viewers before any of the characters start seeing them.
I think Marshall is just trying to fuck with us to make himself look cunning. He is, but not that much.
n the commentary for The Descent, Marshall mentioned that he was going to insert a crawler image into t... Read More

The only reason to make a sequel is to expand on the story of the original characters. This can be either the heroine or the villan. Provided something new is provided and not retred, You'll get the scares and such, but the heroines need go through more. More needs to learnt about the Crawlers aswell. Where are they from? How long have they been there? Are these the only Crawlers there or have others mutated differently to fit in with their surroundings. Water for one, there's quite alot of it u... Read More
Why do they have to do this? The Descent is one of the best new stand alone horrors of recent times. It should be left alone, not to mention the confusion of how you can have a sequel when everyone is supposedly DEAD!!!! It may well be a scary sequel, but come on... LEAVE IT ALONE!!! ... Read More

The English eding was cr*p and depressing just for the sake of it. Why can't we see an horror film without the downbeat or 'shock' ending for once?
Because, hughjass, that's the point of a GOOD horror movie - no 'feelgood' ending, finish your popcorn and skip gleefully into the sunlight etc. The Descent is a great horror movie because, in th UK version at least, it didn't serve up a happy ending. One can only assume that this sequel is being written purely with the US market in mind so, it's ... Read More
After loving the first (with the proper UK ending), this makes me a little sad inside. A great film with slightly ambiguous ending, now with the sequel has been made definite, quashing any debate on what actually happened in the first. ... Read More
