Where No Film Has Gone Before
Abrams vows to reinvent Star Trek
Source: Associated Press

Where No Film Has Gone Before
They may be words to strike terror into the hearts of the Klingon-literate, but JJ Abrams claims he really will be reinventing Star Trek in his upcoming film. Having recently finished shooting on the project, Abrams told The Associated Press that despite the potential wrath of Trek purists everywhere he really will be pushing the franchise -if you’ll forgive a lazy metaphor - beyond the final frontier.

“I feel like this is so unlike what you expect, so unlike the Star Trek you’ve seen," he said. "At the same time, it’s being true to what’s come before, honouring it. I can say the effects for Star Trek have never, ever been done like this. … I can only tell you the idea of the universe of Star Trek has never been given this kind of treatment.”

Of course, Abrams has always maintained that he’s making this film for fans of movies, not specifically Star Trek movies, and has cast his net wider as a result. But he’ll not forget the anorak brigade entirely. After all, any group boasting members who will occasionally surgically alter their appendages in the name of fandom deserves a measure of healthy respect.

“One of the writers who’s a devout Trekker. And we’re serving the people who are completely enamored with Star Trek. But we are not making the movie for that contingent alone. It was an opportunity to take what I think has been a maligned world — to sound crass, a franchise — and treat it in a way that made it something that I wanted to see. To take the characters, the thoughtfulness, the personalities, the sense of adventure, the idea of humanity working together, the sense of social commentary and innovation, all that stuff. To take it and apply it in a way that felt genuinely thrilling.”

A new direction for all things Trek or a calculated strategy to maximise ticket sales? Time will tell but we don’t think Abrams will let us down.

i like the idea and scope
i'm a great fan of star trek but the original is now a CLASSIC it had it's moment now its time for change and abrams will either make it or break it the latest star trek movies were good not great but were rather like watching a lenghted episode so hopefully he'll try a new spin on things and leave out the moral to the story stuff, the only that might hurt this film for is the fact they're going back and not foward. ... Read More

You all are overthinking to the point of lunacy
Old Trek versus new Trek? Has it been done before or not? What will the fans think? WHO CARES!!!! A good story and a well executed film are just that. They have the power to pull us in and make us forget all we question within the first 3 minutes. THAT IS WHAT GOOD STORY DOES and there are plenty of examples of this phenomenon. I won't give examples because we all have our own - proof of this? We've all experienced great story because we are impassioned by cinema so much we waste our time w... Read More

Its gonna be good.
i dont know what everyones problem is, i think this movie is gonna be wicked. and why do so many peope have a problem with an english man playing Scotty, Simon Pegg hails from England which is considerably closer to Scotland than James Doohans native Canada! i am a fan of Star trek and I for one am glad that Abrams is bringing the format into the 21st century. the biggest problem with the casting i thought would be Cho as Sulu, but I've got over it and am now really looking forward to this Film... Read More

An english actor playing a scot is a insult! SOTD is just a zombie flick with a comedy spin to it! Whats Hot Fuzz? A action film with a comedy take to it. Overall point, where's the originality? I'll tell you, his brain is probably too to handle such a word! Long live the Wachowski's brothers? ... Read More

The problem is
The core audience for Star Trek films are the fans. I realise that the non fans also have to watch but if you are alienating the core audience then that is not a good thing. I am not a fan of the shows but have watched them but this film has provided nothing to be excited about and the casting of Pegg especially suggests there may be some epic miscasting here. ... Read More
