A Healthy Arrival For Baby Mama
Tina Fey hits number one

28 April 2008  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: Box Office Mojo

We at Empire love Tina Fey, so it's with great pleasure that we say that her latest comedy, Baby Mama, debuted at number 1 in the US this weekend. The film, about a woman (Fey) who recruits a somewhat unsuitable surrogate (Amy Poehler) to carry her child, took a healthy $18.3 million, not bad on a budget of $30 million.

We also have something of a soft spot for Harold and Kumar, so we're equally pleased that their sequel, Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, came second with $14.6 million. Made for just $12 million, the film has already made back its money. It deserves boundless success if only for the poster of Doogie Howser on a unicorn.

The news was far less good for the poisonously reviewed Deception. Despite starring Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor and Michelle Williams, the dark thriller just scraped into the top ten with $2.2 million.

For the full box office top 50 head to Box Office Mojo.

Made back it's money??
I don't know why, but every time a film manages to make a BoxOffice that is the same as the productioncosts, people seem to think they make back their money... Don't theatres have to make money? And I suppose ads are free as well? But the best of luck to Baby Mama. Tina Fey is a genius! More
